The Turks won't though.  Syria is out of action as a regional force for a generation.  Iraq will probably not survive as a viable nation.  Who's left?

The idealist in me tells me to give two fingers to Turkey and go full hog in supporting Kurdistan. The realist in me though tells me that won't happen, at least not while the PPK are bombing Turks and Erdogan is on the path to totalitarianism. A full blown diplomatic fall out with Turkey will either strengthen Erdogan on a nationalist ticket, or weaken him as both secularists and supporters realise what it's truly like to be in the diplomatic wasteland.

With Erdogan arresting the pilots (due to their involvement in the coup, of course, if someone is to buy the narrative) the incident seems to be resolved to Putin's satisfaction. Note that he's also getting cozy with Iran at present. Say what you will about Putin, but he's certainly no fool. He knows where he can leave his strategic footprint and he certainly doesn't hesitate to jump at the opportunities.

Erdogan cuddles up to Netanyahu too. The most recent announcement is that they resolved their differences too. At the same time, he's on an ice age trip with the Western world. Just today he withdrew his ambassador in my country. Most probably because we allowed a peaceful Kurdish demo in our capital.

After finding out what German services think of him and many Western governments not being cozy anymore, he's looking for new alliances. And there are quite a few willing to take that chance.

Well, as I said yesterday, Turkey recalled their ambassador for our country. Now the EU is showing the usual spineless reaction of saying, it's a bilateral matter. Not that this kind of solidarity comes unexpected. I always said about the EU too much too soon. There's no solidarity between countries, only economical cherry picking interests. That's the gripe I have with the EU. It's expansion during the last decade without setting the political parameters for new members to join.

Can you imagine the howling if they -did- set more stringent political parameters though? Damned if they do, damned if they don;t, on that count..I think.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

That's why I was against the joining of all the Eeastern European countries in 2004. Not because I hate them but because I always thought they're simply not ready for the experiment. No offense, but by then it was obvious they rather licked American boot and only joined to pick some cherries, since we are all paying for their wellbeing. That's why I always said, set up the political parameters and ask again if they feel like joining. The EU seems like a business expanding too fast too soon without any means to control their different affiliates. So now we pay and get nothing in return. Most glaringly with Hungary and Poland, which really weren't ready to join, since they were busy kissing Bush ass in 2004 and are now rules by nationalists only busy holding out their hands for some more subsidies.

That's fine by the way, but if they don't want to shoulder some of the load, let us decide if we want our tax money to go there. They're obviously very well off on their own.

IDK if a parameter like "doesn't lick american boot" is all that realistic, or practical. Wink

I'm thinking Iraq and Syria are a power-vacuum over which Iran and Saudi Arabia will be fighting for the next generation.
