It's hot as hell on a roof in florida.  I was putting up some solar in alachua county, and we shot the shingles with an ir meter.  This was deep into "fall" (a joke in the state for all yall non floridian types) and it read out at 140f.  Good for the panels (water heater), bad for the installers.

Ohio has a variety of weather patterns. It's sweltering hot in the Summer and bitter cold in the Winter. I did Roofing for 41 years until 3 years ago. Slate is some of the hottest roofing material I ever handled. Especially when doing slate work in the Summer. Rubber roofing can get just as hot too.

That's what the wife says, just strange shitty weather.... she's from Columbus, went to Kent...btw. I bet slate is nasty as hell...holds alot of t. mass. Bit like the terra cotta tiles in S. Fl...but denser and hotter..yeah?

Really. What area of Columbus is your wife from? I grew up there, on the South Side, just a block off Parsons Ave.
I'm retiring next month. I'm in my early 60s. Roofing started to wear on me. Currently, I'm a Reach Truck / Putaway driver in a warehouse. I'll just be working there part time, come October.

Yup. I know Worthing pretty well. I did a lot of roof work there for a contractor who had his business located in Sunbury.

Oh yeah, reach trucks are a blast to drive. They're really quick and they have a very sharp turning radius. The one I drive is pretty big.

Ammonia's some nasty stuff. I used to work in a Plating factory years ago. We had ammonia there. Whenever it would spill over the fumes would clear out a whole department. Eyes and nose would burn and you couldn't breathe.

Yup, I was pulling it down for an ammonia etcher - one of the last processes in the plating of circuit boards.  When you work around it (and copper) enough...everything tastes like a penny and you get used to feeling drowsy / having your jeans just fade away and fall off your ass. Small custom defense operation...was getting it to mix a batch for the lab (one of those places where the head lab tech, the hot lead air knife operator, dep man, dark room, silk screener, and plater are all the same guy, lol).

Never went to school for any of this, just to make it relevant to thread. If you hand me enough fiberglass and enough troy ounces of "x" I can both build the equipment, and then the boards the equipment makes...I can design, arrange, and solder the components, and hand you a PC from scratch. All OJT. I had family in it though, a leg up (started off the books when I was 15 at 10 an hour when the federal min was 5 and on the understanding that I would be required to work 24-36 hour shifts, sometimes...and that fuckups would come out of my pay). Nowadays, you can do all of this at home with a -normal- printer...you just need the ink and a magazine cover to layer it on. Not that I;d trust that shit in the avionics of a blackhawk or anything.

The gold plating made me the most nervous...because you're working with a: an open vat of cyanide......and b: something worth more than your life to your employer, a solid gold ingot. Not that this stopped me from gold plating a tampon for an office reward (she was a good sport about it). Probably get sued for a prank like that nowadays.

Volunteered some of that because I was tired of fucking Hirohito over there (hi drich ) talk about how americans don't want to work anymore.

'education' has little to do with a REAL Job.. Education is not the magic bullet it is billed out to be. It's all about work ethic and commitment. Which is what one has to have to obtain an 'education.' But what the 'educated' don't seem to understand is one can have or obtain this same quality of work ethic and commitment with out formal schooling and make equal if not more money.

IF education were the only Key to success then success would not be possible without it.

First and formost I did not discard all education I specifically pointed to formal education. This point was underscored by the artical I left a link to concerning the narrowing gap between what a 4 year degree and a simple high school education will allow one to make over a life time.

So how does that make you an idiot?

If I were saying all education was bad it would also include high school or any trade schools. Clearly the focus of the article was comparing the life time salaries of a high educated verse a 4 year collage educated person. If my bias was against all education as you wrongly represented it would also include highschool education as well.

I said education is not the magic bullet/cure all for everyone. I pointed out that it is possible to become successful and not be formally educated. which means there is another attribute or key to success vastly more important than simple education alone.

The point I was making was that IF their is an attribute that can make an uneducated person one of the wealthiest men on the planet (steve jobs, Richard branson, Dave Thomas, just to name a few) Then why isn't this being taught as the 'solution' to the world's problems???

This very thing is indeed being taught in eastern countries Japan, China, etc... but not here, at least not anymore.

No here we/you all have all been brain washed in substituting what does matter, with formal education/creating debt and over saturating the work force with millions of people with a very limited skill set... And, then we wonder why the world is passing us by.
