Occams Hatchet and Is Materialism "Special"
RE: Occams Hatchet and Is Materialism "Special"
He doesn't , he just expects anyone who doesn't agree with his assertions to overcome that mentality.   Angel
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I feel like, if you can justify yourself going to bat for objective idealism, you might as well go to bat for God. Or, at least deism.

Well, god botherers certainly see them as aligned, if not the same..positions.  However, god botherers see all sorts of shit.  Wink

If there was somthing that was "made of ideas" out there - it would just be something made of a different substance, add it to the periodic table in it's own column, lol..  If everything were "made of ideas" then it's just -the- substance.  Where, in that, we find a god...is just another issue of god botherers seeing all sorts of shit.   Cups, are made of ideas, or matter. Tables, chairs, the freckles on my face. "God" as conceived is made of neither until someone can show that god -is-.

(idealists will have to forgive me for speaking in materialese, up above, it's my native language)

Ideas certainly have durability...and inertia.

Indeed, they have so many literal and figurative attributes of a material thing one wonders why a person would bring them up if they -wanted- to argue for idealism.  Then it dawns on you...it's that the words sound so similar.

Idealism as argued is the notion that the world is made up of the "ideas" you have in your head, that you can assign no confidence to anything outsidfe of your head, or not one of those "ideas".   It doesn't matter that this is not idealism any more than the various descriptions of materialism we've been offered are not materialism.  That's how people take both concepts, and clearly that's how they pit them against each other in their minds, whatever -those- are made of.

It is rather amazing though that anyone could use these terms figuratively who didn't think they could/should be used where they physically apply.

I see layers: There is the world/reality. There is what I overlay on top of that as my understanding/expectation/simulacrum of reality. Then there is the harmonious or disharmonious interaction between them.

Like a roller coaster: One passenger is elated to be there and their body produces hormones of pleasure. The same ride for a different passenger is terrifying and their body produces hormones of stress.

What you overlay on top is included -in- reality.  It's something that you're really doing, after all.  Sloppy concepts lead to uninformative statements, such as the one that follwed that, about "harmony" and "disharmony".

It is something that I am really doing....electromagnetically.....as a projection on top of the current physical reality.

Harmonics can create and destroy.

http://www.livescience.com/7472-kill-vir...death.html

Scientists may one day be able to destroy viruses in the same way that opera singers presumably shatter wine glasses. New research mathematically determined the frequencies at which simple viruses could be shaken to death.

"The capsid of a virus is something like the shell of a turtle," said physicist Otto Sankey of Arizona State University. "If the shell can be compromised [by mechanical vibrations], the virus can be inactivated."

Recent experimental evidence has shown that laser pulses tuned to the right frequency can kill certain viruses. However, locating these so-called resonant frequencies is a bit of trial and error.

A virus' death knell

All objects have resonant frequencies at which they naturally oscillate. Pluck a guitar string and it will vibrate at a resonant frequency.

But resonating can get out of control. A famous example is the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which warped and finally collapsed in 1940 due to a wind that rocked the bridge back and forth at one of its resonant frequencies.

Viruses are susceptible to the same kind of mechanical excitation. An experimental group led by K. T. Tsen from Arizona State University have recently shown that pulses of laser light can induce destructive vibrations in virus shells.

"The idea is that the time that the pulse is on is about a quarter of a period of a vibration," Sankey said. "Like pushing a child on a swing from rest, one impulsive push gets the virus shaking."

Reality would include whatever it is your doing, not just the physical stuff, if there were things beyond the physical stuff.  There's no "on top of" reality. Like I said, messy concepts lead to uninformative statements.

snipped - because who cares?

Harmonics exists within reality, but again, not sure that it is what you think it is, or does what you think it does...and this link certainly doesn't help me get any closer to your position on either count. Seems to me that you're using it as a weasel word for flogging your beliefs......but hey, what do I know?
