After the recent drama regarding the rule on personal attacks and Padraic's suggestion for a "Fantasy Island", we have considered morphing the idea for a fantasy island and a no insult free zone that Adrian suggested to me to create "The Pit". The pit is essentially a compromise for those who feel very strongly for allowing personal attacks, and those who feel we give certain members, especially theists, too much leeway in posting.

The Pit is an area where the "No Personal Attack" rule is relaxed to a "No Flaming" rule. It contains two forums:

The Gauntlet is a punishment forum for people who have been warned at least two times, or for members who have received various complaints from other members for not discussing and responding to posts. Complaints can be made via PM to a mod/admin or reporting a post. A theist or an atheist can end up in there, it is not a theist only zone. For more information read "The Gauntlet FAQ".

The other forum is called R'lyeh. This is a relaxed personal attack zone for heated discussions. It is not a place where you post insults to members, but rather a place to take heated discussions where a moderator had to step in, or create threads you think may be controversial. It's purpose is to give people a place to take the conversation up a level if they really feel they must without disrupting the general forum. For more information, please read the "R'lyeh FAQ".

Note: We are currently testing this idea out. If it doesn't work for some reason, it won't stay, but our hope is that it's a compromise that works for everyone.
