Question about college/NFL helmets.

For the past couple years I have noticed a new style football helmet with what looks to be an almost octagonal indentation shape perforation shape above the face mask. Like if you read instructions on a cardboard box it says "press here".  The only thing I can figure is that it is like crumple zone like the bumper on a car and is designed to give a little in case of a helmet to helmet hit. Does anyone know what I am talking about or what the purpose of that design is for certain players?
