As far as I'm concerned, Bernie Sanders was the "3rd party candidate" in this election cycle. I wonder what happened to him...
When US presidential candidates have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars and a year and half of campaigning to be considered a serious contender, I don't think there's much of a chance of any 3rd party candidate having a shot at the presidency. The American public likes familiar candidates who speak in quick and easy sound bites that are easily digested on social media. I don't see that changing any time soon.
Anyway, the robots will take over in the next century or so, rendering the idea of a 3rd party candidate obsolete.

Haidt's five moral dimensions as they relate to liberals and conservatives.
Quote:From his TED video, Haidt’s five foundations of morality follow.
1. Care/harm. We’ve evolved to feel (and dislike) pain. This isn’t just true for ourselves; we also sense and dislike pain in others. From this comes kindness, nurturing, empathy, and so on.
2. Fairness/reciprocity. This is related to reciprocal altruism. From this foundation comes justice, rights, autonomy, and the Golden Rule.
3. Ingroup/loyalty. We have a long history as tribal creatures able to adapt to shifting coalitions. This foundation underlies patriotism, selflessness, and self-sacrifice for the group. It is active anytime people feel that it’s one for all, and all for one.
4. Authority/respect. As primates, we understand hierarchical social interactions. This foundation underlies the virtues of leadership and followership, including deference to legitimate authority and respect for traditions.
5. Purity/sanctity. This is shaped by the psychology of disgust and contamination. Being repulsed by things that look or smell bad can keep us from eating unsafe food. It also underlies religious notions of striving to live in an elevated, less carnal, and more noble way.
Haidt theorizes that the rise of civilization may have needed all five of the morality categories.

Wow. Just great. I've either read or heard part of this before but I just watched it through again and so helpful. I think it deserves its own thread. Wonder if that's already been done.

Big fan of Bernie, but she won, fair and square. In general:
Democrats love Hillary. African Americans love Hillary. Women love Hillary. Latinos love Hillary. Rich people love Hillary. Old people love Hillary.
And now in the context of the general election, even those who didn't love her back in the primaries are generally compelled by reason and ethics to support Hillary over someone like Trump.

Some Bernie fans had seemed to be going to Trump, though. Never really understood that.

He ran as a democrat and lost.
And the notion that his supporters could listen to him and then vote for Drumpf tells me that they were just morons to begin with.
