That much? My estimate would have been much less. That's quite a tidy sum if you don't have to pay for housing or insurance. I don't know what priests get in my country, but 33 k a year is above the average pay. And it's much above average if you consider all the benefits attached.
Edit: I just looked it up. 22.400 before taxes when they start at their job and up to 36.000 in their career if they aren't promoted anyway. Euros, that is. That's way above average, even for an academic.

OP, One sided symbiotic relationship.
You mentioned money. If you're living off your parents (and that is to be expected up to a point) what differentiates you from other parasites? Are you returning something of substance or value to them?
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

In my case, it was kind of an investment. I paid off their debts later on. But that I would have done in any case, since I had the means. Money never was that important to me. Well, now it is, since I don't have it anymore, but back then it wasn't.

He chose to give up a career that would make him lots of money to do what he believes in with all his heart and what he truly thinks will bring great service to others. I get you don't have the same beliefs, but it's a shame you can't appreciate something like that, even on a level of principle.
Incidentally he's actually been told the same condescending remarks by 2 close friends he had growing up. Both of which are atheist. I was referring to the priesthood. Not to being a counseler.
Part of the priest's job is also to counsel people. That's why I went to a priest when I needed mental help. But that wasn't the point I was making.

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I for one understood it as the point you were making. The priest being the more important counselor than the psychologist. Which I totally understand. For people being predisposed in that direction, they certainly are.

So you returned something of value and/or substance. Never thought you didn't. Unless I'm wrong, I think I remember your act as a sacrifice for the benefit of your parents.
Waiting to see what the OP has to say.

I don't view it as a sacrifice. It was the only thing to do without shipping my mother off to some nursery home. Which would have meant a death sentence out of despair. I couldn't have lived with myself if that had happened.

The point I was making was about at least having appreciation and respect (out of principle) for someone who gives up a lucrative career for one where he truly believes will bring great service to others.
And to clarify, counseling with a priest is not more important than counseling with a psychologist. It all the depends on the situation and what the person's needs are. For me, and for the situation I was in specifically, talking with a priest was more helpful. But if I had clinical depression, for example, I'm sure a psychologist/psychiatrist would be more appropriate. Ideally seeing both is best if you are a person of faith and spirituality is intertwined with your mental health.
