A Saudi Atheist.. Yeah, that's original!

RE: A Saudi Atheist.. Yeah, that's original!
I'm sorry but I didn't fully understand, you're saying that the US government is trying to impose laws in your country? It won't be the first time that happens but I find it ironic that they're standing against gay marriage in other nations while 9 of their states allows it

where are you from BTW?

Not the government of USA, Conservatives parties are trying to impose laws on states in the bible belt of america trough democracy that are unconstitutional, which is illegal

From Portugal the country in europe that nobody remebers, that started the age of discoveries and probably discovered america and australia

EDIT:america is doing nothing in my country i might've expressed that in a wrong way

Actually, the Aborigines discovered Australia around 40-50,000 years ago

After that it was probably the Chinese.

The first recorded European to land on Australia was Dutch; William Janz in 1606,but who knows for sure?

Who discovered what and when is a large area of study, with few certainties. Most popularly accepted European 'discoverers' belonged to colonising imperial powers, which promptly set about stealing everything not nailed down and murdering the rightfiull owners.

Tangent: If I were Portugese, I'd be a bit pissed off that much of the world thinks Brazil is Spanish..Consoling

Second tangent:there's some slight evidence of trade between ancient Egypt and South America.Viz the discovery of traces of NICOTINE in some mummies. (Tobacco)
Quote: The recent findings of cocaine, nicotine, and hashish in Egyptian mummies by Balabanova et. al. have been criticized on grounds that: contamination of the mummies may have occurred, improper techniques may have been used, chemical decomposition may have produced the compounds in question, recent mummies of drug users were mistakenly evaluated, that no similar cases are known of such compounds in long-dead bodies, and especially that pre-Columbian transoceanic voyages are highly speculative. These criticisms are each discussed in turn. Balabanova et. al. are shown to have used and confirmed their findings with accepted methods. The possibility of the compounds being byproducts of decomposition is shown to be without precedent and highly unlikely. The possibility that the researchers made evaluations from faked mummies of recent drug users is shown to be highly unlikely in almost all cases. Several additional cases of identified American drugs in mummies are discussed. Additionally, it is shown that significant evidence exists for contact with the Americas in pre-Columbian times. It is determined that the original findings are supported by substantial evidence despite the initial criticisms. [Please refer also to <Edlin>]

I meant as europeans...

There's a old portuguese map that references Big Jaya located where australia is located, and think there is a conquest monument in north america that says that the portuguese found it way before columbus but this is not official

Welcome! You're story is an inspiration and makes my personal struggles with "coming out" seem a bit paltry. Good luck. And here's hoping you'll choose to stick around. Life is worth living; it's only the religious folks who will tell you it's fleeting. But I would recommend making a B-line for the Saudi door. Wink And finally, thank god for your father!

The key word being "slowly," as in very slowly. Like millennia.

I haven't been here long, but I think this is the second time I've seen you correct a misspelling. You seem to share my impatience for a person's inability to either type well or look up words they don't know how to spell. Were you an English teacher or something? I just find it amusing. Wink

While some states allow gay marriage, other states and the federal government do not recognize same-sex marriage, and some states have outright criminalized gay marriage (if they catch you in the state with any kind of claim that you are married to a same-sex person, you can be jailed, even if you are visiting or passing through!)

This is in spite of the fact that all states are supposed to honor one another's vital statistics. That law is still on the books (honoring other states' vital statistics - marriages, divorce, anullments, births, adoptions, etc), but it's severely weakened in the case of marriage. For instance, a 22-year old man was arrested in Nebraska for statutory rape of his 14-year old wife who he legally married in Kansas. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/30/national/30baby.html It's the same theory of nonrecognition of marriages performed in other states which are legal there, but not legal in the state where you are.

Some states even have constitutional amendments about not permitting same-sex marriages in their state!

This all happened before in the early part of the 20th century, except the issue then was interracial marriage. A black person married to a white person could be legal and acceptable in some states, legal and outright illegal in other states where they were visiting or if they moved to another state which prohibited interracial marriage.

When my spousal unit and I were living in Oklahoma, his sister and her legally-married-in-California spouse were afraid to visit us because they could be arrested! They just had to have the status of being legally married to a same-sex partner. No evidence of sexual activity within Oklahoma (or anywhere else) was required.

Keep strong, meine schwester. Let's hope you stay safe in Saudi Arabia; as we all know, Saudi Arabia has virtually no protections for any religion other than the government's particular favourite interpretation of Islam, and there's probably a good chance that you could get arrested for your faith, or lack thereof. Most of us are lucky enough to live in a country where we at least have some modicum of rights.
