It's the same in Europe, and it's not so much the rightwingers merit as it is the failure of conventional politics. Rightwingers don't have any concepts. Nothing on the economy, nothing on social security, nothing on foreign policy. Their one and only product is fear and resentment and seemingly easy solutions to complex problems.

Trump is just like all the other right messiah figures rising in the wake of the crisis of 2008 and thriving on fear.

Right, that's why most Republican politicians have been masters at developing dog whistle racism.  It's a way to appeal to the racists in the crowd without openly appearing racist.  You can't openly say you don't want niggers voting, so instead you talk about "voter fraud."   It's not nice to say that you want to round up all the Mexicans and send them back home, so instead talk about how bad of a problem we have with "undocumented immigrants."  Because we all know that refers to Mexicans, not someone from Canada overstaying their visa.  You can't openly state you want to keep foreigners from the Middle East out of the country, so you claim that accepting Syrian refugees will let in terrorists.

The trouble the GOP has is that Trump has totally torn off the facade of propriety and is openly courting the racist base, which is how he got to where he is today.

Give or take 30 percent in my country. Now the rightwing asswipes start to appeal to a christian Europe, based on christian principles, which opens yet another can of wirms that had been closed for at least the last 40 years. No politician did that in my living memory.

Encouraging though, our churches don't play ball. They denounce the attempt for what it is. Another cheap shot at populism, calling the rightwingers out for that. Something the secular parties haven't got the balls to do. To say I hate to admit it, would be wrong. But the churches are currently the biggest allies when going against racism, bigotry and populism. Always were in my country, to tell the truth. They were always on the forefront when it was about fighting xenophobia and inhumane fear hate mongering. In 1993 we had a march of 250.000 against a xenophobic plebiscit the rightwingers wanted to bring through parliament. The churches were with us all the way.

The rightwing appeal to christian values is of course a sham, as every other thing they say or do. It's only to fish in yet another pond to transport the anti Islamic fear mongering. It's always combined with the big bad Islamic takeover and a healthy dose of general Xenophobia.

I feel your pain.  After Obama was elected, so many people in the red state I live in were openly expressing racist sentiment toward him and black people in general.
