Wow, did not know that.  Loved the movie S. R. I've already got one novel on hold at the library.  Think I'll make Colorado Kid the next.

Had you asked this question when I was 16 I would have instantly said "The Lord of the Rings." Had you asked in Grade School I would have said either "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" or "The High King" (the concluding book of "The Chronicles of Prydain which has held up surprisingly well as I've aged). ...

The Chronicles of Prydain deserves far, far more love than its given these days.

Yes, it does. It holds up with age far better than the Narnia books.

I'd disagree. It was nominally about an extraterrestrial terrorizing a region, but the underlying theme -- of youth lost and recaptured -- while perhaps not original, is handled with an interesting plot, and certainly something we all consider on occasion. The Stand as well, with its theme of loss and redemption, is great too, for my money.

I don't know what King had in mind with that one, but it's a little bit too god interventionist for my liking. Something Drippy could have dreamed up in his more lucid moments, since it's still King, but still too much.

Likewise with Carrie .. which didn't prevent me from being majorly entertained watching the movie.

I didn't have a problem with the theistic elements, myself. The theme of loss and redemption was borne, to my eyes, in the loss of civilization itself, and I read the theistic elements as an organizing frame, rather than central message.

Seems like one is making excuses for a horrible writer.

Well, he is a theist, I think.

But 'evil/crazy religious figure' is a King staple.
