I realize that's anecdotal, but the rest of the rural areas of the state can't be too different.

Local UMC had a positive message on their churchy sign after Orlando shooting, all the local schools I checked flew flags at half staff then too, and with no insurrection.

We've got as many catholics here as in the cities, I think they all get the same drivel from rome, so I can't imaging the neighboring catholics here are much more or less rabid than those in des moines.

Most anyone outside of a nearby Baptist franchise that I've talked to about them thinks they are all assholes as much as I do, and their pastor especially. Hell, a couple years ago, one of his members (that I was unaware was a member) asked me what I thought of that pastor. "Total Asshole" I replied, and I'm still friends with the individual who asked.

seemed to be consistent revulsion about the spreading of anti-Mormon agitprop at a school north of here a while back. If the local christers can't work up 10% of the revulsion I feel towards the fucking LDSers they are serious slackers indeed and a HUGE disappoint to Jesus !

I'm finding the article to be shrill if not hyperbole, at least for a substantial chunk of the west 1/2 of the state I live in.

Yeah, you can't really just paint a state red and think it has total coverage. There will be pockets, maybe everywhere. Hell I don't know.

Anyone living in a red state who will vote against the 1% should get battle pay.

The right knows how to instrumentalise people. There are certain keywords that have been around for ages. Intellectualism is one of them. Always used in a derogatorry fashion. Being an intellectual is bad. There's already some kind of resentment towards intellectuals with certain people. They don't take advice from someone who's branded as intellectual. There are others as well, such as the left. The left is virtually non existant these days. There's hardly any organised political left anywhere. So they brand moderates, if they show the slightest tolerance, the slightest social inlinations, as being left. Marxist even. These are the ingredients to make a whole bunch of people act and vote against their very own interests. Being ignorant suddenly becomes a virtue and being against any kind of state influence is the road to freedom. That this, for the trailer park resident, only means the freedom to end in the gutter is beyond the understanding of many people.

Suffice to say there is always some flag to be waved. Be it belonging to a certain race or a certain country. People, even if they are the saddest losers on the planet, are assured to be some kind of special, just for belonging to that group. Much better than "the others" anyway.

Goebbels, by the way, who was a genius when it cam to Propaganda, already made use of these terms. And there's another one, the German word no less, that found entrance into the American language: "Lügenpresse". Used to dennounce the very idea of a free press in the 30ies. Used again in the USA by Trump and most recently by this alt right meeting that evolved into a full blwon nazi show. Complete with Hitler salutes and Hail Victory (Sieg Heil to the letter) or Hail Trump shouts.

Well, yeah; you're right for the most part. So how about this: maybe the lazy-asses who didn't bother to vote will do so next time in such overwhelming numbers that this will only be a 4 year aberration and we can get back to dragging The Stupid down the road to progress one agonizing inch at a time. 

Short of Calexit, it's the best I can hope for.

I hope that it was "laziness."  It seems to me that a lot of African-Americans decided that they weren't interested in a choice between two honkies and the younger voters were pissed that Bernie flamed out.  Yes, I hope you are right that they realize that they fucked themselves good and hard but somehow I doubt it.  I just don't know if 4 years of this will be enough to mobilize their asses.  It will depend who the dems come up with as a standard bearer.

Having suffered under a right/right coalition for six years already, I highly doubt that they are able to learn. The damage this government did still provides the courts with lots of work. A few former ministers went to jail, others are still in line to face trial. Ten years after they got chased out of office. The main party responsible, the rightwing Freedoms party, is again leading the polls. So, I don't really put much trust into the general population. Very shortlived memory, I would say.
