The fake war on Christmas starts again....
#21
RE: The fake war on Christmas starts again....
Against my better judgement, I put 50c in a slavation army bucket last night on my way into the grocery store.  The lady ringing the bell says "Thanks, and Merry Christmas", I give her the shy nod, and say "Happy Holidays!" and her smile froze like I had said "fuck you".

Sigh.

Next time, say, 'Happy Christma-hanuh-kwanza-ka!'

Even money her head explodes.

Actually, it's not.  The holiday you're celebrating with the tree is the winter solstice.  There's nothing in the Bible or the Christian religion that even vaguely suggests (or even makes sense of) using evergreen trees to commemorate the (completely wrong season) birth of Jesus.

The truth is that pagans used to deck out their homes with sprigs and branches to make their homes look alive, so that Death would pass them by in winter. Or they did it just because it helped them remember that spring was around the corner. Or because Balder the sun god like evergreen trees.

Yea I get really sick of this shit every year. I happen to celebrate Christmas but it is not a Christian holiday it was a Pagan celebration stolen by the Romans centuries ago. Some Christians love playing the victim, though. The martyr so to speak.

"Oh, look at us poor Christians! Secular society is trying to take our holiday away from us! BOOHOO"

It's honestly sad at this point.

One kid at my work legitimately thought that Jesus was born on December 25th; he actually believed that Christmas was created by Christians, for Christians. When I politely disagreed with him and told him he should look into the origins of the Yule festival he ignored me and said, "It's about Christ that's why it's called Christmas."
“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.

It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love.

Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll

I'm not pagan. You're wrong I'm not celebrating the winter solstice. I'm an atheist celebrating christmas with a Christmas tree along with thousands of other non Christians and it has nothing to do with the Jesus or the bible you're right about that.

Coincidentally as I was typing that last post in work a girl behind me was saying how much she loves Christmas and a workman came in with a Christmas tree under his arm saying where do you want the Christmas tree.

Makes me glad this work place isn't infected with political correctness that makes this holiday/Christmas thing even an issue.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Bing Crosby sang "Happy Holidays" in the movie "White Christmas", released in 1942. So if anybody complains about you saying "Happy Holidays" ask them why they hate der Bingle.

Also just to add, replacing Christmas with holidays is going to sound stupid from my perspective anyway.

In England holiday is when you have time off work or away from home for pleasure, basically American version of vacation.

As far as I'm concerned though I'm all for festivus. And an aluminium pole instead of a tree.

So, Christmas now has nothing to do with Jesus and the Bible, but calling it anything but Christmas is stupid?

Oh, the irony of you, an atheist, arguing that it's fine that a religious holiday can evolve enough that you are allowed to celebrate it but having the terminology evolve to fit the times is ridiculous.  It's almost as funny as as Christians creating a holiday by hijacking another festival and its customs and then throwing a hissy-fit when anyone else dares to propose a change.

I've been in favor of the "two party system" since I found out we could party on Xmas AND New Year's Eve. As Xmas is now about the money I have no problem with it.
