I would say that overall, in my experience, a PhD generally means less money over time compared to getting a degree and going straight into business.
There are of course exceptions as there always will be, but for every high paying job that requires a PhD, there are thousands which just require a degree and experience.
Remember also that just getting a degree isn't the end of your educational development. There are plenty of certifications around to help you advance your career.
