Didn't feel like copying the whole post - here's the link.

I can think of two reasons, apart from the one mentioned in the article:

1. Names are often repeated in dynasties.

2. The pharaoh in question may have gotten a vision from Osiris telling him to move the pyramid over a few feet.

The king would built the "bent pyramid" had to have a second one done, IIRC.

I think sneferu had three built, the maidum pyramid, the bent pyramid, and the red pyramid.

The important thing is the three sneferu built were all big pyramids that were built on the grand Old Kingdom scale comparable to the great pyramids of Giza, not the feeble little wannabes of the middle kingdom like the two mentioned above.

One other theory might be that a pharaoh might have remained impressed enough with the previous pharaoh after his death to dedicate his efforts to perpetuating that one's influence. If the following pharaoh still 'heard' the voice of the previous one as god, he might have felt called to serve him. Our modern understanding of ego and self interest might have been as weak as their apprehension of their own existence as a 'self'.*

The false perception that the humans of antiquity fell for, in both polytheism and monotheism still exist in the religious and the rich today. Nobody needs that amount of wealth in reality, but just like then, far too much of the world's religions and wealth still stupidly think they do. It is unfortunately deeply rooted in our evolution that we still think we are the center of the planet as if we are the masters of it and the most important to it.

Nobody needs a pyramid, my mom got cremated. I am donating my body to science. Nothing wrong with differences, those are going to exist, but our species loves to over do it. Those pyramids are certainly beautiful but they still didn't prevent the pharaohs from dying nor did those monuments to superstition make their gods real.

I'm donating the hex-wife's body to science. They have to find her first, of course.

Sneferu also ruled for at least 24 years and there are some indications that it was even longer.

Worse, take a close look at this photo of tourists climbing on the Red Pyramid.

Generally speaking you can count 3+ layers of masonry behind each person indicating that the individual stones were on the order of 1.5 feet wide.

Now contrast that with this photo from the Great Pyramid.

The individual stones are much larger and they fit together much better.  The GP is a whole order of magnitude superior in workmanship.
