House Repugnicunts take a swipe at overtime pay.
May 3, 2017 at 11:12 pm
If you work overtime and get paid for it, you should read this and maybe give your senator a call.
Quote:The measure, backed by Republicans, would let employers give workers paid time off instead of time-and-a-half pay the next time they put in extra hours.
The fuckers want to give employers an out for paying overtime.
According to this article there will be rules in place to prevent employers from coercing employees into taking comp time instead of overtime pay.
Quote:the bill includes language that bans employers from “directly or indirectly intimidating, threatening, or coercing or attempting to intimidate, threaten, or coerce an employee" to choose comp time over pay
Yeah, and there are laws regarding workplace sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, workplace violence, toxins and other dangerous conditions in the workplace, etc... The problem is, most average Joes can't afford the legal costs when these "worker protection" laws routinely get violated (and even those who can afford it routinely get black-balled for having the audacity to stand up for themselves). What makes these elected thugs think this will be any different?
This is a bad idea and likely a step back toward the sweat-shop mentality that reigned in the era before labor unions.

It's bullshit, but I doubt it has legs.

Why is working overtime better than paid time off?

Many people work overtime specifically to make ends meet. They cannot even afford their current vacation time. More vacation time is essentially useless. Paid time off is nice and all, but if all you can afford to do is stay home and watch TV, it feels pretty meaningless.
It's unfortunate that many people don't make enough to make ends meet with a single full time job without overtime, but there it is.

As a farmer, I'm not guaranteed minimum wage or overtime. Or holidays/vacation.
And in 242 days, possibly no health insurance.
Still get to pay property and drainage taxes, even if I don't raise a thing, however.

It isn't either/or, it's both - if you work extra hours, you don't get paid for them. Instead, you get to go home.
Here, overtime pay isn't required, but most employers will pay 1.5x-2x an employee's hourly rate if they work more than 40 hours. Suppose you make $15/hour. This is $600 for a 40 hour work week. If you and your employer agree to 2x the hourly and you work 45 hours, you'll gross $800 for that week. Under the scheme proposed above, if you work 45 hours, your gross will be $675, but you'll be awarded five extra vacation hours, for a total of gross of $750 (assuming that vacation pay is the same as your hourly rate). If this happy state continues for a year, you'll lose $2600 under the proposed scheme.
It wasn't clear from the article, but I suspect employees will also be required to pay for their own lube to facilitate this corporate bumfucking.

I would love to get either overtime pay, or time off. But when I was hourly, I would have taken the time more often then not. The option would have been nice. Although from a management perspective, I can see where the logistics of this type of system could be a pain.
If you have the work as an employer, Paying them is better than the time off. You make more money that way.

Eventually they'll pass a law saying that the employer can either pay the worker or sell him/her and buy a new one.
