It may be that we have natural mechanism to slow us down. I've seen research on rats in which population density led to drops in births, increased violence, and increased homosexuality. When you see those things from an individual level, it's hard to see, but overall maybe there's something to it.
Back to the homosexuality, I read that changes in the mother's hormones (talking people now, if I remember correctly) when she's under duress affect the phenotype of the offspring-- i.e. a male offspring is more likely to have so-called "feminine" traits (read: be gay).
Now, don't jump on me over this, because I don't know it to be true-- I'm just repeating something I learned way back when, when men were men and sheep were nervous. But in principle, it kind of makes sense I think, that a sexual orientation that shows up in such a huge percentage of the population (like maybe as much as 5%) might actually be there for a good evolutionary reason.
