You got it. I should stop using Roman numeral riddles.

Do you have another one for us?
I don't believe you. Get over it.

You are given a balance which you may use exactly twice. How do you identify the slightly heavier marble with 100% certainty?

Put 6 marbles in the scale, 3 on each side.

If the original measure is balanced, weigh remaining 2 to see which is heavier and you have your answer.

If the original measure is not balanced, weigh 2 of the 3 marbles from the heavier side.

If those are balanced, the heavy marble was the one left out.

If they are unbalanced, you've found it on the heavier side.

Are you doing it with actual marbles? Smile

I think I detect a hint of sarcasm there Wink

I posed the question to my dad but he was under strict instructions not to give me any hints of any kind if he got it before me. But it wasn't very comforting when straightaway, after I started thinking aloud, he just said 'got it' and playfully smirked, much as I'm imagining you're doing... and then straightaway for Jess' one as well. I'm not very good at this... I guess I'll have to wait until Jess is asleep before I have a chance Wink

RE: Riddle me this.
Three prisoners are bound to three stakes which are standing in a row such that the first prisoner can see the two in front of him, the second can only see the third, and the third can't see anyone.

The chieftain who captured them shows them 5 feathers, three of them black and two of them white. He then takes three of them randomly and attaches them one each to the prisoners' hats without them seeing, hiding the remaining ones. He says: if one of you can find out the color of his own feather, you are all free. If you say the wrong color, you all die.

Silence ensues, but after quite a while, one of the prisoners yells: I got it!

Question: Which prisoner is it and what is his color?

It's the first prisoner who can see the other two. His hat's feather is black. He knows because he sees two white feathers on the hats of the other two. He definitely got lucky with that random arrangement.

Jesster, you get partial points, but in your case, the answer would be immediate.

RE: Riddle me this.
Ah, then there are multiple possible answers. I'll work on this one some more.

New answer to add onto my last answer:

It's the first prisoner who can see the other two. His hat's feather is black. He knows because he sees two white feathers on the hats of the other two. He definitely got lucky with that random arrangement.

-OR-

The second prisoner answers. If the feather in front of him is white, he answers black. If his own was white in this situation, the prisoner who could see both of them would have said "black" immediately and he would not have had to answer.

-OR-

The third prisoner answers. If the other two are unsure, his has to be black.

RE: Riddle me this.
Honestly, from the way the riddle is worded, only the first prisoner can get the correct answer because "Silence ensues, but after quite a while, one of the prisoners yells: I got it!"

If all were silent, how would the second and third prisons ever get hints about what the others could see?
