It's almost as if the system were designed to preserve the status quo....

or despair of ever being rid of the practice since both parties are enamored of its utility
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Obviously so. Same with the other anachronistic features of our Republic.

It will get cycled irreversibly in one direction so that a SCOTUS case will change things, hopefully. The GOP will, as always, think short term. They will drive the gerrymandering train into the dirt until the practice gets tossed to an algorithm that will draw impartially, which means they'll suddenly be at the whim of..... gasp...... brown people!!!
eeeeeeeeek!
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Dr. Bernando de laPaz had better ideas for organizing legislators than geography.

Occupation was one way.

IIRC, around one congress critter per 500,000 citizens these days. 500,000 farmers could vote for a legislator. 1,000,000 secretaries could vote for 2. 3,000,000 fast food workers could have 6 people plying the corridors of power looking out for their interests.

Hell, I bet there are enough sex workers in the country to merit a seat in congress.

How about trying that for a while and see what happens ?
