The back drop for Monica and Linda was an ongoing lawsuit of Paula Jones against Bill Clinton.  The tapes Linda had proved both Lewinsky and Clinton had lied in that case.

Still missing the point.

Consensual sex IS NOT ILLEGAL. Even with affairs. 

The attempt to bring consensual sex in front of juries who were looking at harassment and sexual assault charges was wrong. If they wanted to bring in other witnesses claiming the same things, that would be fine. 

The only court where asking about their sex would have been if Hillary had divorced Bill and sued him.

Lewinsky was not accusing Bill of harassment or assault, if she had been, then yes, a judge would be right to allow that. Bill and Monica while what they did was wrong, were not committing a crime.

The legal term is "relevance". Consensual sex is not the same as committing an illegal act such as assault. 

The point being in a criminal case it was wrong for the court to allow a consensual act in. 

When you bring in witnesses in a criminal case and bring up the accused past, IN ANY CRIME, most courts and judges will seek to limit the scope of the past of the accused to related acts. Or I should say, any defense lawyer worth their salt will argue to limit that scope.

Consensual sex is not related to assault.

Otherwise if our courts allow anything in just because they don't like something the accused did, that mentality allows for railroading the accused by bringing in unrelated non criminal acts. This isn't just about Bill, this is about what we should want in a long term system.
