Can't imagine what it must be like there today since our air is so hazy the sunlight's been orangish/yellow for the last few days but our AQI is still moderate.
When I left my office last night it was the first time all day I had been outside. It smelled smoky in downtown Portland and the AQI maps I saw before I left were showing a big plume of purple coming in from the east. There continues to be a thick haze over the city. The sun has been visible in the sky at a salmon-pink orb almost all day for a couple days now. My coworker and I got out our eclipse glasses to look at the sun and there was so much particulate matter in the air we couldn't see the orb through our glasses - the haze had cut that much light.

The Eagle Creek fire from a plane coming in to PDX.
The fire has spread to Multnomah Falls and fire crews are working to save Multnomah Falls Lodge.

I hope everyone who lives out there, stays as safe as they can. Listen to evacuation orders if they come across your way and keep us posted so we know you're okay.

Local news is reporting that the Eagle Creek burn doubled to 20,000 acres as of yesterday evening, and is over 30,000 acres (nearly 50 square miles) as of this morning. It has merged with the much smaller 1,000 acre Indian Creek fire which has been burning for over 2 months.
It appears that the growth is slowing, however.
The U.S. Coast Guard has closed the Columbia River to all traffic from Portland to the Bonneville Dam (approx 50 miles).

Yeah the latest news is that the lodge is still there, but the forest surrounding it has burned.

Last I heard, it's too smoky for aircraft to operate, and in most areas, the terrain is too rugged for ground crews.

Sure looks incredibly rugged. And canyon-fires can spread faster due to the canyon corralling and focusing the winds.
