Sounds like a convenient excuse for a dictator on the rise to build up an army he wants and needs to suppress the people in his country who are very, very, very unhappy with him


Edit to add: I just realized that I am not so sure if I am talking about Venezuela's leader or the US's?

The situation for Venezuelan citizens is dire regardless.

If the US 'conquered' their country it would result in an improvement in their living conditions. In fact, the war threat might be precisely the Grand Fenwick strategy. The influx of aid following an immediate cessation of hostilities being the goal of the war all along.
 The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

There is a large body of experimental evidence for the plight of little brown people down south after the great gringo up north deigned to come down to help rid them of self-rule, pride and sovereignty.

The Grand Fenwick Strategy is predicated on picking a fight with someone with deep pockets and a susceptibility to guilt. Venezuela threatening war with Peru right now isn't going to have the desired result.

Granted, it would just be easier to dispense with the war and for the US to start sending them medicine, food, TP, medicine, food, money, food, medicine, building supplies, medicine, food and money unbidden, but so far, Venezuela hasn't really gotten any attention that they can put on their dinner plates. Sinking a USN navigation buoy and then immediately surrendering is probably a pretty damn good idea.

Beats mass starvation which is where it's headed if they don't do something.
