A long read but
an interesting account of the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

RE: A long read but

Don’t know if you’ve read it Min but Steven E Ambrose wrote a book called “Crazy Horse and Custer”. Superb read, gives a very good account of the Indian side of things. Not just the battle but also the lives of the leaders and some of the braves who took part. Highly recommend it if you haven’t read it!

I've not read it but I have heard of it.

Similarly, one of the finest WWII Pacific theater histories I've read was John Toland's The Rising Sun. Much of it was written based on interviews with surviving Japanese leaders or from diaries/journals of common soldiers.

Custer was a well known, over selling disk with delusions of grandeur. Oh yeah, wasn't he really racist too?

No sense, whatsoever. None.

While he got what he deserved, I loathe the thought that his men had to pay the price for his... stupidity.

Soldiers always pay the price for their commander's stupidity.

It's playing out now in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Its happened before, and no doubt it will happen again. The phrase "Lions led by donkeys" springs to mind.
