I know that charitable people need down and outers to feel good about themselves.
I like to do my part by being on the receiving end.
It's the least I can do.

I encountered a newly formed 12 Steppers group many years ago that was toeing a pretty strict line about sobriety and such and I'm pretty sure the motivation was to be 'taken seriously' by other groups and folks doing referrals to various 12 Step groups.

Had quite an influence on me, BTW, and as 'most' 12 Stepper groups I've encountered since then have consistently been more 'liberal' (FLOABW) than that one, sometimes when I channel their more austere version of 12 Stepping, I get 'the look'.
 The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
