For purposes of this forum my name is Sister Agatha!

I am a sister and teacher at a Catholic grade school/middle school somewhere in the midwest.

Forgive me for saying so, but I was intrigued by atheism and athesits, because at some level I don't really understand them.

Now now. I know Im just a little bit biased being a nun and all, but I almost find it impossible to believe that anyone coudl really live "without God".

God is love. God is smiling at a child's fingerpainting, playing a guitar and singing a lovely song, and quite frankly just being there with for someone when they've had a crummy day, and them being there for you. In my mind God is love itself, and for me living without God would be pretty lonesome!  [Image: embarrassed.gif]

I suppose some of the bible stories sound a little wild, but I could never imagine living without Jesus. Honestly when I've had a bad day at school and am ready to just call it quits, I say a little prayer to Jesus..and I can't explain it..He always gives me the strength I need to get through the day.

I am so happy you agreed to let me post here, and Im really looking forward to some  productive discussions!

"For the purposes of this forum".....

We could care less what you call yourself. But I really hate to disappoint you, this isn't the place for you to simply preach, we smile, and say "Darn, you got us". Worst thing you can do here is set yourself up for disappointment by thinking we are lost  puppies for you to save.

You "suppose" some of the bible stories "sound a little wild"?

That's an understatement.

The purpose of this website is mainly to provide atheists with a place to hang out. It is not here for theists to preach or lecture, you will get responses here that might offend you.

If you expect to stay here long here are a couple things you can do for yourself.

1. Debate, don't preach. We've seen that billions of times, it does not work.
2. Don't assume what we know or don't know.
3. Do not treat us like sheep, we are not sheep, we are just as diverse in our personalities and economics and classes and politics as any other labels.

4. We will not barbecue your kittens or eat your babies. We will attack your logic and that will offend you but try to separate you from what you claim. Treat us as individuals.

Welcome, and I hope you stay on this forum and share your views. I hope for a fruitful discussion  Smile

Atheism means lack of faith in one or more gods. The burden of proof is on the theists to prove their particular god exist.
Not to hurt any of your sentiments, but feelings and emotions are not evidence. I feel good when I smoke marijuana, but that will not convince many that it's good to do that. While Marijuana might have few health benefits, it can still be pretty unhealthy.

Once again, welcome!

Regards.

Heretic!  In your religious views stated in your heading you say "I believe in one God".  Well I believe in all of them, equally.  Your faith is indeed weak if you must harden your heart toward everyone's God but your own.  Think of the hell some of those gods will enjoy casting you into.  Don't worry though, most of them don't maintain a hell.  In fact if you were to choose just one god whose hell, vindictiveness and propensity for malevolence one should most want to avoid, you have chosen well.

But seriously welcome to the land of the godless.  I hope you can let your habit down and have a little fun.  That is one thing we atheists do well.  Who knows, maybe you can save just one of us from sister Bellarmine's hell.

By the way, do you ever respond to other posters or are you afraid that the devil speaks through us and will tempt you?

Think of it as a theist without the emptiness inside.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
