It was only much later in life that I understood what Plato meant and these days I often find myself relating the story in discussions. I plan to one day read Plato's Republic but I have other books lined up to read before I get to that. One day...
Be sure to get the 2nd edition G.M.A. Grube translation of Plato's Republic. Some translations are difficult to read. Also, the Grube translation has wonderful introductions to each of the ten books. It helps to have an idea of what you are reading before you read it. The first time I read it was the Jowett translation (which is beautiful at parts but hard to follow).
Like you, Plato didn't really appeal to me at first. But he grew on me. Now I consider the Republic to be the one of the greatest philosophical works of all time.

How do you feel about kittens?
We just got two kittens at our house. So even as I type this there is the pitter-patter of tiny feet outside my office. Does any person really NOT like kittens? Although my favorite "kitty" is my fully grown Siamanx who has graciously let me live in her house.
