Yeah, just had a laparoscopy done a few days ago to address some issues. The surgery procedure pierces the abdominal muscles so movement is a bit painful for a while.

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Hope you can get comfortable while you're laying around.  I think bed rest would do me in.

Big Grin  Love your irreverence. I used to frequent an atheist site where one of the people used to tell the religious to apply the "Jesus Existence Test"- go to the top of a building and jump off. If you are a true believer™, he will save you.

I read through to this point (not to the end, yet), but I'm not sure that the question that I get from the OP has been addressed. The religious claim that atheists are immoral; they tell atheists that without religion, they'd be like suicide bombers, only in every aspect of society.

Atheists point out that the immorality of some of the atrocious behavior performed by the religious can be placed at the root of religious belief. (I'm tired; I've been up and down ladders for the last 10 hours, running conduit and wires. If this sentence isn't making sense, I may elaborate, tomorrow). Is that what you are asking, CL? I personally fall on the side of seeing that people can be made to do immoral things if convinced in some way that their religion condones it. I think that this is pretty obvious in current world events. I'm an atheist; you'd pretty hard pressed to see me wearing a Semtex vest for our goddess, Athe, or for any other reason.

You are lucky to have had a laparoscopy instead of a laparotomy. I've had two laparotomies, and my abs have never been the same. Hope all is well!

First of all, I wish you a speedy recovery.

My answer is no. A belief in the existence of something can’t be immoral. It can be wrong, but not immoral.

Say a lady believes in Santa. That wouldn’t be immoral. Suppose she manages to pass a law that forgives taxes if you credit Santa for your gifts, but charges extra taxes if you credit yourself. That would be immoral.

I don’t believe in gods. That’s not immoral. If I picket religious funerals, that’s immoral.

I'm not convinced that picketing a religious funeral is immoral, but it sure would be an asshole move. FFS, just let the grieving people grieve over their lost family member. Dodgy Though I do notice that any picketing of a funeral is most usually (in the news) done by a certain religious group.

I think it's irrational but not immoral.

Anyway, as the title said, I'm curious to know from people's perspective here whether you consider it a sort of negative point against morality to believe in God. Is doing so immoral in your views? No need to get into details such as "well, it depends on what you believe about God and yadda yadda...."

...Just belief in God in and of itself. Is that an immoral thing?

I don't think believing that there is a god is moral or immoral.

Most my issues are when people start quoting from articles of belief that the brand of morality they subscribe to is objective morality or a morality that cannot be debated.

Oh and get well soon, I cannot imagine what a mischievous bored CL would do to nursing staff Wink

Theism is not immoral. It's can be anti intellectual . But that itself is not necessarily evil . Unwise but not evil .
