Theists, I know the bible is a rule book on how to live our lives.
I also know that in today's modern age, we've abandoned some bits because ...because we don't want to go to jail!

I want to know what guides you in your bible cherry picking? Your parents? Your priest? Your own morals! (god forbid!)?
And when you do cherry pick the non moralistic rules, how confident are you that God also doesn't mind what you're ignoring from HIS book?
Maybe God frowns down on murder just as much as wearing mixed fabrics?
On what authority do you know otherwise? From another man? You mean God hasn't told you it's OK to wear mixed fabrics? You are so brave in my book!

I agree, why stop at BONDS polycotton undies.
If we're gonna burn, let's do it properly!
Why not cherry pick the shit out of it till there's nothing left then? The burn isn't going get any hotter is it?

Let the walls of the fallacy dam burst right open!

Indeed!

If you do not study the Bible and the history of other cultures during those years you can't know why these laws were given. It does seem funny to us about mixing different materials in one piece of clothing or planting two different types of grapes in one field or two different crops in the same field and cooking meat and milk together. We also do not see things such as pork, camel and rabbit to be a problem to eat. We have to look at what God was doing with the Israelites to understand why these laws were given. God wanted His chosen to be separate from the nations around them as he separates himself from sin. In other words these are laws of purity for a nation that was to bring God the Son to the world. The Canaanites (referring to the different nations living in the promised land) did all these things mentioned above, so by not doing those things Israel would keep itself separate from them. God told the Israelites not to marry into the Canaanite families another separation and it is why God wanted Israel to destroy all those peoples, He knew if they didn't they would wind up doing the things they did and would fall to worshiping their gods. And we know the rest of the story. The Israelites didn't destroy all those nations and took up with them in the things they do and worshiped their gods. So you see these were laws for the Israelites to obey to separate themselves from the world around them. Also the animals that were forbidden as food did not fit into categories of animals that could be used for sacrifice. The pig has cloven hooves yet doesn't chew the cud and it will also eat meat, the heron flies with it's neck tucked in, the other birds of that area flew with extended necks. Even the laws about purification apply here, many of these things were not sinful it was that the person was not pure for different reasons and need to be cleansed to return to the nation of Israel. There are many laws pertaining to this very thing and there are worship laws that God had them to follow that no longer apply. It is the moral code that is important to Christianity, God said "Be holy as I am holy," meaning separate yourselves from the world as I'm separate from the world, this is what God wanted from the Israelites because they were to be His representatives in those lands and today Christians are to live to a higher moral standard to show they are separating themselves from the world. So before you condemn or ridicule Christians I would suggest a little homework from the atheist is in order. Even though you do not believe in God why do you throw the first stone of accusation at Christians when you deliberately disobey the laws of God's moral code. Unless you can live to that standard whether you believe in it or not don't try picking the splinter out of our eyes until you drag that log out of your own.

I always love how when theists talk, their God's lips move. Ventriloquism at its finest.

You just can't stand it when a Christian is right so you have to do your little song and dance of let's call them stupid. You should try studying something worthwhile so you can be more informed when these subjects come up.

James 1 (KJV)
2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

It wasn't a comment on your stupidity, dumbass, it was making a point about how Christians are constantly making shit up about how their God thinks this, their God thinks that, when the reality is that they have no way of knowing such things and are just making God a one size fits all excuse for whatever prejudice the Christian has. As Anne Lamott has written, "You can safely assume you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do." Maybe instead of reflexively denying things you don't understand, you should pull your head out of your ass.

Even I'm cringing on their behalf ... true words indeed.

Even if there were arguments that led us to some omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent deity without that being a massive contradiction in terms.... how the fuck would that line up with the motherfucking Bible or any other holy book? If such a deity wrote a book surely it would at least be just a little bit more passably non-obnoxious?

Religious folk just need to grasp something from the bible to believe. Something .... anything, that supports their fairy tale beliefs. If you believe in something strong enough, you will always find something to satisfy your rational side, that your belief is well founded, what ever that belief is.

I think the process is called Cognitive Dissonance. I simplify the term and call it a Stupid Switch.

Now I know we all use the Stupid Switch from time to time, but with religious folk it is a dominant personality trait Smile

I see things much more clearly than you believe, I hate no particular people as God says love they neighbor and enemy. I can hate the actions of others as God hates their actions. This Christian and most I know do not make up stuff, we can determine things from the scriptures, why, because we have a guide called the Holy Spirit to help us. By the way over the winter my wife and I took in a homeless gay man so he wouldn't have to sleep out in the cold, he ate at our table and shared time with us. So you can take your comments and stick them where the sun doesn't shine. You are as bigoted as you believe Christians to be.

RE: Weighting the Cherries.
The prohibition against mixed fabric was a cultural reference that any person in that time would have understood.

They preferred wool.  Wool was their fabric just like cotton is ours.  They were holdfast cultivators.  They had no cotton, they grew no flax.  The fucking evil non-believers down in the valleys made and traded all that.  This was a direct prohibition against cultural and economic mixing with the enemy...and it comes in a passage positively -obsessed- with the dangers of mixing.  The dangers of mixing seeds in the field, beasts of burden..and..ofc, of mixing blood.

Interestingly, their priests would have been linen clad with woolen dyed threads. So that much hasn't changed. There's always been a double standard between the shepherd and the flock.
