How does society as a whole tend towards biased thinking or not?

How do you recognise bias in you own life? How does one ride themselves of bias? Is it an exercise of will or simply something you learn (free will vs determinism)?

Is bias a myth? If it is, what is our (your) role in coming to grips with being wrong (or at least incorrect) or not? Can one justify never being wrong from a theoretical standpoint?

What would be required to believe (heh) that one does not have any biases?

Is it easier for you to separate seeing bias in others or yourself more?

How does our perception tie into our biases?

Are our tools to measure the universe fallible due to bias? Why or why not?
Do you want my unbiased opinion?

How can an opinion be unbiased?
But your individuality and your present need will be swept away by change,
and what you now ardently desire will one day become the object of abhorrence.

RE: Let's talk about bias!!!
Lol, pretty sure that was that was the point.  Riffing off of that..though, opinions aren;t a problem for bias in an overarching sense unless there is no such thing as a fact.  We all have opinions about facts, and many of us hjave differing opinions of facts...this reduces the issue of whether or not some personal bias is involved in -the- facts. We catch it all the time through collaborative processes not just in the arena of science, for example..but in the broader context of life.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

First impression it is a person with to b-holes.
Hehe

Quote:Some things to consider...

Society does not know how to think unbiasedly. everything get filtered though a biased source otherwise you would have stampedes/riots as we did a few years ago when people were allowed a glimps of what happens when they think on their own.

Quote:How do you recognise bias in you own life?
When fact has no bearing on what I think. For example Kim jong un and the president of south korean both said they would not be talking about ending the war and giving up nukes IF not for trump's intervention.
Yet we still see trump as a bumbling idiot who doesn't know what he is doing and is leading us to war...

The truth Trump has ended an on going war that is almost 70+ years old and he is paving the way to take the nukes out of the hands of the north koreans forever. This is eace prize level stuff here, yet he can't even get an acknowledgement from our biased media.

Therefore when ever I see my self act this way. to 'feel a person is bad/despite what he is doing' I can identify bias in my own life.

Quote:How does one ride themselves of bias?Is it an exercise of will or simply something you learn (free will vs determinism)?
Biased is sourced from Pride. seek to let go one's pride.

Quote:Is bias a myth? If it is, what is our (your) role in coming to grips with being wrong (or at least incorrect) or not? Can one justify never being wrong from a theoretical standpoint?
one has to enter a state of delusion inorder to up hold the idea of never being wrong.

Quote:What would be required to believe (heh) that one does not have any biases?
that he has a fool proof system of men and women dedicating themselves to learning and explain all the secretes of the universe and with in a short 300 years have masted all knowledge in the universe because we know how to launch a rocket to the moon and we have cell phones with the internets on them. With such an organization who's success rate is often hidden by it's core doctrine of ever learning new and different things, it is hard to not believe that one has access to absolute knoweledge.

Quote:Is it easier for you to separate seeing bias in others or yourself more?
I am an objective person given all side 100% oppertunity to 'pan out.'

Quote:How does our perception tie into our biases?
perception defines reality, for a stupid person who think their reality is the only reality that can be... then they will be lead around by their bais.

Quote:Are our tools to measure the universe fallible due to bias? Why or why not?
Our tools to measure or even observe the univers are fools toys.

We occupy one singular point in the cosmos, relitively a singular point in time (in relation to how long everything elses has been here) staring an expanse so large and vast, we depend on the universes 'sea spray' to try and understand something like the ocean from a single dimension.

Imagine trying to explain the whole ocean and everything living it from sea weed to the mysteries of the deep, through the lens of a shot glass worth of sea water at a time. now tell me you would have a theory having looked at 300 years worth of shot glass sea water that would accuratly describe the visible universe/oceans let alone all of it..

We are so stupid to assume we know anything of value. we can't even survey every part of this planet let alone tell you what is really going on 100 trillion light years away.

That's a bit harsh, Drich.  Knowledge and value are not black-and-white propositions, but infinite shades of grey.

One must consciously struggle to overcome it.  With religitards I fail constantly.

He's done that a few times before.
Either we know everything about a subject, or we know nothing about it, it would seem.

Life/Truth is not graded on a curve in reality. if it were the world would still be flat and the america unknown. People are either right or they are wrong. the problem with us is we abhore a vacuum where knoweledge is concerned, and will substitute 'right for now' as absolute truth. which is a lie as truth for now is nothing more than dressed up faith, the same faith used to start a belief in God... yet when speaking of God you use your 'right for now' knowledge as if somehow were more legit than belief in God.

Seriously, from one demonsion we can accuratly predict and describe all the others?

From one point in time (meaning cosmically and the millions of trillions of years the cosmos has been) we have a 200 year period from which we can compare and observe recorded change.

From one finite perspective, meaning from one point from where three plotted pints in the universe come together we use our telescopes to describe everything knowable in the cosmos.. (which is the dumbest thing I've ever heard anyone ever lay claim to -carl sagen) The idea being from my perspective on this particular street corner I can describe accurately anything at any point in existence given the correct telescope. I can describe what a guy is doing on the 14th floor of the shang shee building in tieminian square. I can describe what is happening with the ocean floor as it pertain to volcanic activity, I can tell you what is going further than what light can travel literally, and describe accurately a black hole/gravity well which is the absence of everything... or there could just be nothing in that point in space.

This is junk science when compared to what we demand of what is observed/observable here on earth. but yet this junk science is dressed up as unquestionable undeniable truth.

I'm not interested in absolute truth, Drich.  I'm interested in practical truths that I can actually use in the real world.  If you see that as a lie, there is nothing I can do about that and I'm not even going to try to persuade you otherwise.

People who know nothing criticize others for not knowing everything as a way to level the ground.
