Prayer doesn't bother me in the slightest, if the situation is hopeless. Now, if a person were praying instead of getting out a burning house, that is sad. If a parent is praying because their child is dying and nothing can save him or her, then it isn't sad, at least not in the way that you are implying. I think it is natural and possibly even helpful. Even atheists make wishes. We just don't expect them to come true. Tongue

Making wishes and praying are different things. Making a wish is a process of putting conceptual desire into mental language, and subjecting that desire to the internal scrutiny that mental language promotes. Praying does not bother me if there is no other hope. Then its merely a issue of emotional comfort in the fact of practical hopelessness. Praying in other circumstances reinforces a superstititon, and promotes double think in those who are otherwise capable of rational thinking. So incorporating superstitious rituals such as praying into a individual's normal personal behavior does bother me.
