I mean, you can have great genes and still be a cunt or an asshole.  Having good genes doesn't define a good person, unless you think that one's genetic makeup encompasses everything about a person's personality.

I disagree. A cunt or asshole probably has poor genes for personality.

You think that a person's personality is 100% defined by genetics?

I don't really accept that as upbringing has a huge role to play in personality

No. Hence the "probably".

So, then someone could be an asshole, who has great genes.  Hence my point.

Agreed.

But that shouldn't matter, because the good genes are what will be passed on to the kids. (Although the "asshole-ness" could result in a damaging environment for the kids.)

I'm still not sure exactly what your point is. You called it a contradiction to say that someone can have good qualities and bad genes - and I pointed out that a person's quality is not encompassed by their genes.

My point is that only a person's genes are passed on to the next generation, not necessarily all their qualities. So, it would be wise to ignore a few personality flaws in a person provided they have great genes. And you don't even need to meet a person to determine if they have good genes; you just need their DNA. I just happen to believe that good genes in a partner are more important than superficial qualities.

Edit: This is true only if your end goal is making a healthy baby. If you're just using the dating process as a surrogate for companionship, personality and looks would trump genes.
