Atheism in art
August 6, 2018 at 5:11 am
Religion inspired Goethe and Bulgakov, Titian and Caravaggio, Bach and Mozart
any significant work of art inspired by atheism? I can't think of any
I liked the parts where these old yahoodies tolchock each other and then drink their Hebrew vino, and getting onto the bed with their wives' handmaidens.

Yeah and why isn't there any a-leprechaunist art? All I ever see is art full of leprechauns.

It goes to show that if everybody stopped believing in God, all art would stop.

After visiting Naples and seeing pictures of Saints and Jesus and Virgins and Angels at every fucking corner, you bet your sweet ass I'm glad the world is getting less religious by the hour. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Caravaggio but after a while it gets boring.
Religion is just a story, and as such it inspires reflection and artistic appropriation of its content. Atheism just means you don't believe that that story actually happened, and while it may influence an artist's work somewhat, it will hardly ever take center stage because, well, it's nothing more than a lack of belief.
Anti-theism, on the other hand...
"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.
Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.
Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.
Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.
Vote "yes" on Proposition 1321. Think of some kids. Some kids."

Art in the 16th century, for instance, was not inspired by religion, it was held captive. If anyone had dared to paint an image of a godless world , Christians, gentle. meek, and mild, would have burned them alive. So much for inspiration.

I can think of a great deal of art inspired by passion for things other than religion.
Naturally there is a dirth of art on a non-belief. Though it isn't non-existent. Much like non Harry Potter fans don't create Harry Potter fan art. But non Harry Potter fans still create art, just not inspired by Harry Potter.
