Best NES/SNES emulator(s)
Looking to get into emulation. I'm pretty old school as far as my old school console habits go. I have been collecting carts for years.

But I have found myself with little money recently so I thought I'd try to get my fix with an emu. Plus I could do the try before I buy thing when looking at new carts to purchase. The thing is, I don't really know where to begin. Any advice??? What's the best emulator out there? Where is a good place to grab ROMs?

SNES 9x is pretty good. For the NES I honestly can't remember though.

If you're on mac you can use openemu for basically all platforms.

The most stable emulator for NES I've found is NESticle.

Here is a link I found with a bunch of emulated DOS and Commodore 64 games, if anyone likes those...

My first console was called something like the CBS... no idea what the manufacturer is... it was a massive thing and I remember a space invaders type game and the irreplaceable Mr Do... I'd love to see an emulation of that. Or Sid Meier's Colonization on the Amiga 500/1200... there's a PC version of that game but the Amiga version had much better graphics and music. Never had a Commodore 64 (but still, strangely, feel a lot of nostalgia about it) but had a ZX Spectrum. All that before getting into consoles proper with the Mega Drive (and Master System Converter), Mega CD, SNES (not NES though), Game Gear (but not Game Boy), N64 and then finally a Nintendo DS. Since then just PC.

I've never really understood emulation that much... I've got one for spectrum games... and DOSBox if that counts... and was given one for the Mega Drive... but never really understood how it works with ROMs? Do you have to own the cartridge in order to get them, is that the deal... is that why you've got a collection of them? Because there's no way you could actually physically transfer the game from a cartridge to a presumably PC based emulator? So it's just a matter of essentially DRM? Fair enough if that's the case, because I'm very strict like that meself with music and stuff (ie if I sell a CD I delete all ripped mp3's on all devices before I do), but just curious really how that can be the case if all these consoles being emulated are obsolete and no longer supported by their manufacturers (presumably).

No. I just collect (and play) old game carts. Many of my games have the original boxes, manuals, etc. It's a hobby.

I remember one of their appearances on Parkinson, back in the day. After Emu famously mauled Parky, the next guest was Billy Connolly. He came on and said to Rod Hull "If that bird comes near me, I'll break his neck and your arm!"

Ah. Makes sense... they're certainly cheaper and you can pick em up anywhere. I just find that the consoles themselves aren't reliable enough for me to commit to that... both my N64 and Mega Drive don't work properly any more...they work sporadically. I don't know what happened to my SNES so every now and then I look on ebay for one and consider getting it, but I have to weigh that against the possibility of it being likewise unreliable. If it weren't for that though, I'd love to get one.. play Mario Kart, Mario All Stars, and Striker again... those were my favourites I think.
