linux Mint &%@%$*
I've installed Mint on my main computer.

IT looks just dandy too, except for one tiny problem: I can't logon,. t doesn't recognise my password.

i reinstalled and wrote it down, just in case I'd made a mistake.

Any ideas?

It's case sensitive, including the username, try that.

I know I'm an old fart and a bit of a wanker, but I'm not quite that bad yet, surely? Thinking

Mint gave me the option of erasing XP,which I took. Possibly some shit left over. So, I'm presently wiping the hard drive with Dban, which does a 3 pass overwrite. I wlll then install Ubuntu.if that's Ok if I'll think about installing Mint in tandem. (each OS is under 700MB)

It's more common than you would think...

You have to confirm your password when installing so the chances of it being typed wrong both times are slim but not impossible, maybe that's it.

The OS might be 700mb on disk but that could be up to 2gb when installed, keep that in mind. I wouldn't bother with an extensive write-to-zero, it should make absolutely no difference.

Have you thought of using virtual machines?

Hold down shift or esc to get to the boot menu
Boot into recovery mode
( type ls /home (lowercase 'L') to list the usernames to check if you need to)
Type passwd (your username) ...so passwd fr0d0
Job done

(someone may need to re-post this if the dick still has me blocked)

That might work, but sometimes you need to log in as root (which is disabled in favour of sudo) and when it's not disabled often uses the sudo user's password ... Unless Mint have some auto super user login for recovery mode it wouldn't work.
