Trump may not have a shred of anything resembling a principle or empathetic human impulse, but you can always count on him to do the “right thing” if it appears he is in danger of losing at something. Was that really so fucking hard, Donald?
Thank you, Senator Flake. It’s just a shame that it takes retirement and nothing left to lose for anyone in that party to behave with decency.

Meh. I'm glad to see this development, but not hopeful. Trump is likely reopening the investigation to undercut Democratic furor in the upcoming elections. And it's probably a prudent calculation on his part.

The story will be in the news another week. The GOP just lost another week before the midterms. Depending on what the investigation finds, there could be an even longer delay with the GOP filling the 9th SCOTUS spot.
Moreover, Trump really had no choice. McConnell doesn't have the votes with the Flake coalition holding out for an investigation. If he did, he would've said "Screw you, we're voting this weekend and finalizing the confirmation by early next week."

That was my thinking before hearing that Murkowski wouldn't confirm him without an FBI investigation. As I noted in slack, that Flake had called for a delay seemed to indicate that the Republicans didn't get what they were looking for out of the closed door meeting with Manchin, Flake, Collins, and Murkowsky after the hearings yesterday. Given that Trump has caved, likely at the request of Republican leadership, suggests that they really didn't get what they wanted out of that meeting.
(Thinking about it now, Murkowsky alone probably wouldn't have been sufficient. There is a mix of a handful of senators, any one of which voting to confirm would seal the deal. This leans towards suggesting even that much may be in doubt.)
