Quote:Unless you've been blissfully unplugged, you must have come across the term "blackout" lately. And you may have thought it means inebriated to the point of unconsciousness. Falling-down drunk. Blotto.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh appears to think so, based on this exchange last Thursday during his fiery self-defense before the Senate Judiciary Committee:

Quote:"Have you ever passed out from drinking?" queried Rachel Mitchell, a sex crimes prosecutor from Phoenix retained by Republicans to ask question at the hearing.

"Passed out would be — no. But I've gone to sleep. But — but I've never blacked out," Kavanaugh replied. "That's the — allegation, and that — that's wrong."

But that notion of an alcohol-induced blackout is wrong.

A less confusing term might be "alcohol-induced amnesia." It can be total. Hours of experience and events can be totally missing from memory. Or it can be spotty. Either way, it can be hard to impossible for a bystander, or even the inebriated person, to know when it has happened.

Misunderstanding blackouts has big implications. The phenomenon could reconcile the disconnect between what psychologist Christine Blasey Ford says she remembers so indelibly about an alleged sexual assault by Kavanaugh one summer evening 36 years ago and Kavanaugh's categorical denial that it ever happened.

(NPR)

"It’s not a rare phenomenon — people who aren’t alcoholics can experience this when they drink too fast, such as when they play drinking games. One problem with this behavior? You don’t remember the blackout, so you don’t learn from your actions."

Bad reasoning isn't a problem. But in this case, there wasn't any reasoning at all:

Quote:LMFAO. That's the best excuse you could come up with?

Go back and sit on the porch with the pups. Clearly you can't handle running with the big dogs.

That's a dodge and an insult. No reasoning whatsoever. If she can't stand the heat, she shouldn't start the fire to begin with.

So her occupation decides that? I hope you don't have any kids... what a horrible example you'd be setting to them.

Anyways, slightly off topic, but relevant none the less, just pasting something here that I wrote somewhere else.
I stan Chris Evans so fucking much. Not only is he hot and adorable and funny and talented, he has strong opinions, he's not afraid to make them known, always defends his position, and stands up for his principles. If that isn't a true Captain America I don't know who is.
We need someone with these qualities as President, someone intelligent and articulate and truly caring about things beyond his own money. Not someone like Cheeto von Tweeto who mocks a woman who has most likely been sexually abused. We need people in SCOTUS who can separate their own emotions from work, and remain respectful to the law, something Kavanaugh showed he is not. Regardless of whether he sexually abused Ford or not, Kavanaugh doesn't deserve to be at SCOTUS.

Hilarious  Because that has everything to do with what I do for a living? Mmmmkay.

Stay on the porch. Your retorts are childish and irrelevant.

Of course it does. If you met a doctor and a dishwasher, you'd assume the doctor is more intelligent and more highly educated than the dishwasher.

No dumb ass. It's not starting anything. I was addressing your stupidity. You just don't like it when it's done back to you. Grow up.

I wouldn't necessarily assume the doctor was more intelligent than the dishwasher on simply meeting them.

I would assume the doctor was more highly educated in his or her area of expertise than the dishwasher. But for all I know, the dishwasher could be vastly more educated on any number of subjects than the MD. I've known many people who were better educated than their "betters" but lacked the credentials to cash in on it.

And the doctor may be wrong and the dishwasher may be right (despite your assumptions).   Appealing to or attacking the person (or what they do for a living) is fallacious thinking.
