That would be great, but only if you have a compatible blood type. Either way, you save someone like her. Pro tip: if you're really into helping kids to increase your karma output, the children's hospital near here lets you donate to the kids. You could look into something like that.
I wish I had recorded her smile when I showed her a photo of you donating. It's funny because I told my dad that we were spreading the word about platelets and someone was donating. He's ever the skeptic and said, "They say they will." Oh, Dad. What an old grump. Poor thing looked insanely overwhelmed when we learned how to feed her through the tube today.
It's gotta be insanely difficult to see the love of your life being fed from a tube. Ugh. Fuck cancer.
I'm either O+ or O-, I'm ashamed to say I don't remember which. Either way, I'm glad to play the skeptic spoiler. I'll check out the children's hospital route as well.

I really want to donate, but I'm terrified. I'm already slightly anemic all the time, which makes me tired and more prone to panic attacks. Needles are also a big fear since I've fainted before when drawing blood and to me that was a pretty terrifying experience.
Nevertheless I want to work up the courage to do this one day. That, or take a course in Phlebotomy and volunteer. I'm not squeemish with blood, and needles I can get over so long as it's not my arm they're going into. In the meantime I'll continue to donate to the Red Cross.
Wishing you and your mom the best <3

Ankara, you sound a lot like I did about it. In fact, I still get anxious. I don’t have any needle problems, but I can’t stand feeling trapped or stuck in one place with no way out. Sometimes, the thought really does count. This is one of those times. I mean, people still need platelets, but you know it and will do something about when and if you can. That’s good.
Steel, it’s definitely hard on him. As for platelets straight to mom, I’ll look into it. We would have to time it around her chemo because that’s when her numbers go to their lowest and ... I don’t want to jump to convolutions, but her platelets were 76000 today, which is high for her lately. That *could mean the chemo is making room in her bone marrow, which could mean time.

Autocorrect changed conclusions to convolutions in my last post and I’m leaving it. That was great.

Hey, all. It's been a while since I've updated, so I figured I'd put one in here. Yesterday, my mom had her first blood test after her second round of chemo. She didn't need a platelet transfusion! (Of course, other people still do.) She was so happy, she's eaten more by mouth than she has in months. There will be a scan in April to see if the treatment is working. Please wish us luck.
Mom's A-, by the way. She may still need platelets in the future. I'll keep you posted.
On a side note, my mom is very loosely Christian, but her family is hella Boston Christian. A few of them came over yesterday and sang and prayed over her in the house. It was sweet because they kept asking god to bless Tibs and I for everything we do for Mom. It's ludicrous because she's my mom and we all know I'm an Atheist, but it was still nice. They're kind people, plus Tibs had a good laugh from his office upstairs when the singing began.

I'm glad to hear that there's great news regarding your Mom, Shell.
Sadly, because of my blood type (B neg), I cannot donate platelets. I can give whole blood, though.

Well, as long as she's not using the platelets for some sort of "buy time so you can eventually live forever" scheme like is becoming popular now for some reason...

Yeah, that's fucking weird. She's using platelets for a sort of "live for a few more months" scheme. She's not stupid or vain enough to want to live forever.
I'll tell you what, she's been in a really good mood the past couple of days. I think chemo really can give us *quality* time and maybe just a bit more quantity. She's lucky where she doesn't have many side effects.
