In my common language I'll use the words "jesus christ" when something happens that I can't quite believe or when I'm shocked.
Jesus = unbelievable which is how I tend to think that everyone uses it. It really signifies to me that most everyone relates Jesus to an unbelievable event.

The "oh my god" phrase has really come to mean something about the same thing, but it can be used in any number of ways.
I use it all the time.

I like using "bless you" when someone sneezes because then I'll say "Since I'm an atheist, does the bless you really count ?"

Sometimes I like to say "Sweet Lucifer" but you don't think I am a Satanist? Also I remember I once watched that movie "Meet The Fockers" where the whole movie is about meeting the Jewish family and I was surprised how much Jews yell the word "Jesus" out loud and yet Jesus doesn't mean shit to them and as a matter of fact they say 'Jesus' when they're tired of saying 'shit'.

As an atheist, do you feel comfortable using that popular expression of surprise?

I try to replace god with dog but I still find myself slipping up. The accidental cognitive dissonance is strong with this one.

On a relevant note, I have previously offended someone religious when I put extra effort to avoid the mention of god. Lol.

I have no problem using 'religious' expressions, like "oh my god", "jesus f'n Christ", etc. Doesn't make me uncomfortable at all.

There are many common sayings in the English language that have a religious source, that I'll bet you use:

Bite the dust, drop in the bucket, the Writings on the Wall, the blind leading the blind, broken heart, can a leopard change its spots, A man after my own heart, Labor of love, Letter of the law, and a couple of dozen more common sayings are Biblical in origin.

Well noted, guys. I personally take responsibility to how I come across to others. And rather not be misunderstood for representing myself with something I don't believe in. So I try to avoid using them whenever possible. Besides it's fun coming up with new expressions and swearing words.

Totally with you there, @Brian37 . It's indeed rude when people slather 'blessings and prayers' in your face whilst fully aware of your stance on religion. Even more so if they've been specifically told to stop.
