Have you met people criticizing atheists who use the expression OMG
March 15, 2019 at 4:59 pm
This time it's not about personal experience or a case I heard about, I'm curious if any of you met people unsatisfied with atheists who say "Oh my God" from time to time.

I get criticized - and even called a hypocrite - by atheists and theists for all sorts of things. Yes, saying, 'Oh, my God' is one. Some others:
-Using money with the Queen's picture on it (the Queen is the head of the CofE)
-Saying, 'Bless you' when someone sneezes.
-Using the word 'bloody'.
-Celebrating Christmas.
- (my personal favourite) Liking the film 'Pitch Perfect' - it's about a capella singing, and a capella means 'of the chapel'.

I don't get that, at least not more than once . None of their fucking business.
I DID have a rather odd De La Salle brother at school; chided us for saying 'golly' (means god) and "gee whiz' (Jesus) Oh, plus not to write 'Xmas'. I found out years later, that the 'x' in 'Xmas' is the Greek letter 'chi', the first letter in"Christos'; it's just shorthand.
There is a serious god botherer who took a shine to mum a few years ago. Mum treats her like a grand daughter. An ordained minister and very kind hearted, she's been very good to mum. But, my 92 year old Catholic mum takes no shit from her. Eg" No dear, that's not right-------" or "That's not what it says in my bible". Mum is a Catholic convert, and really knows her bible.
God botherer and I had words early on, now she treads a bit more carefully with me.

I wasn't there when it happened, but the story was told to me by a man who does not make up stories and he was there.
We have weekday Torah readings on Mondays and Thursdays. Everything about it is ritualized. Someone has the honor of removing the Torah from the Ark. Someone has the honor of lifting the Torah up into the air so that everyone can see it. Someone has the honor of rolling the scroll back up. The honor of lifting the Torah into the air is called 'hagbah'. We give that honor to someone who is strong and steady and will not drop the scroll, because the consequences of dropping a Torah scroll are severe for everyone who witnesses it. So the honor was given to a guy one day who had never done hagbah before. He heaved the scroll up into the air, was surprised by its weight, and exclaimed, "Jesus Christ this thing is heavy!"
That is about the most outrageous thing that a person could do while performing hagbah. I am told that it was met with howls of laughter. The guy wasn't taken out and stoned or anything.
We do not inherit the world from our parents. We borrow it from our children.
