When someone says something really stupid.

Having a clear out at work today. Right at the back of the building that I was clearing I found a piece of wood... It looked like the back of an old photo frame, written on it were the words 'this frame was put together by Kenneth Jones 4th of August 1933'

I showed it to my neighbour... He said, and I quote.. "Why did he put the exact time?"

If it's my first encounter with a person and/or a seemingly dumb comment they have made, my usual response is to give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps your neighbour misspoke when they used the word "time". Maybe they meant date. Maybe it was just genuine curiosity.

I have no doubt I have made many, many comments in my lifetime that someone else would treat as incontrovertible evidence I'm stupid.

I guess I've just reached the point in my life (nearly 50 y.o.) that I don't want to exist in a hair-trigger state of "oh my god that's so stupid". Life is better for me when I don't default to that.

Now, if this was just one of multiple instances of stupid comments by a person I regularly interacted with... well... I'd probably come to the conclusion said person was an idiot, but I still wouldn't get bothered unless it was about an issue of genuine significance.

Like if they insisted on voting Republican.

I can remember being in a book store a few years ago. At the moment, I was looking for something by Joseph Conrad (I found nothing I did not already have, FYI), but I wasn't able to get to that shelf because two middle-aged women were standing at the shelf talking. Apparently, they said they met the author, and even had dinner with him and his wife, and, at the moment, I thought they sounded like they were talking about Joseph Conrad. Was I just transplanting my own thoughts onto these women? That had to be the answer; Joseph Conrad died in 1924. This was, if I recall correctly, 2015. Sure enough, they actually name-dropped the author: Joseph Conrad. It took all my self-control to ask where the fuck they kept their Philosopher's Stone. Apparently, about a minute later, they figured out that it couldn't have been Joseph Conrad for reasons that should be obvious and they were thinking about someone else.

Everyone has their moments of "DOH!". Some people though, have them considerably closer together.

Why do people say things like - at seven a.m. in the morning?

Isn't the morning where we keep times that include 'a.m.'?
