Sorry for the stress you have to go through over this, but if you and your husband can come to a meeting of the minds on religion, the long run will be a happier relationship. Congrats for that

Awesome, mooney. I'm truly happy for you and your husband. I'm also glad to hear that you didn't push this issue like a Christian would on an atheist... but rather you chose to ask logical, rational questions designed to allow him to be skeptical. I think that's the most any of us can do for religious folks in our personal lives.

Sorry I am in and out it's hard to find time to get online. Anywho dinner was weird. His parents were civil, didn't say anything mean, were mostly just worried for his soul. I made sure to keep my mouth shut since it wasn't my debate. His mom and I kinda just played with the baby while the men debated in a nice way even if it was super awkward.
At one point his mom said she just thought a life with nothing would just be so sad. You'd have nothing. I quietly said "well I'm pretty happy" and shrugged. Tony on the other hand was not shy to say all the horrible things he has discovered about the religion. He said they harbor and forgive pedophiles. His mom was like yeah we don't agree with that either and don't know why they do it. Tony said yeah well I can't follow a society that accepts that. Then he brought down the big thing that got him to denounce it. He said a god worth following wouldn't allow a special needs 3 year old to fall into a sewage drain, get stuck, and literally drown in shit while firefighters and paramedics are trying to get him out. That he knew as he did CPR on that small dead body to no avail that even if there was a god he wouldn't follow it. That kinda shut his parents up. They said they were sorry he went through that and the conversation switched.

Atheism comes to a lot of medical and police after seeing just how horrible people are to each other and the kinds of just chance things, as well.

Tony went to his funeral and keeps his obituary in a special place along with a few other people he lost that hit him really hard. It's mostly kids. TV is wrong and CPR almost never revives a person and if it does the person will most likely die again. Many times they've had to do CPR multiple times from someone that wouldn't stop dying only for them to be pronounced dead at the hospital. I agree this kind of profession leads to atheism. My cop friend was also a catholic and he told me he lost his religion holding a dying child as well. The worst way to get to atheism but it can't be helped. Anyone that holds a dying/dead child and thinks it is God's plan is not ok. Tony's dad actually said events like that should bring you closer to God... what?!
