Patterning Bass ( and the fishing thread)
#21
RE: Patterning Bass ( and the fishing thread)
For small mouths here, August is bottom and shade fishing with jigs usually in 5 to 10 feet of water. Bait is small crawdads, minnows and worms.

That reminded me of something.  Grandma and I would go out into the orchard where the brooder house was, at night with flashlights and look for earthworms.  Big squishy worms that you had to try to grab before they scooted back into the ground.  She kept them in a coffee can of rich black soil covered with damp newspaper.  That can was kept in an old refrigerator that was in the old wash house between the house and the orchard.  Apparently most of what she was fishing for had a taste for them.

Geez, I hadn't thought about that in decades.

Nightcrawlers. We’ve fed plenty of those to the fish this year.

Yeap, earthworms are great.
Then you just find an overhang and hang the worm right in front of the fish you want.
It's so easy, at least for perch tail catfish.
Not so good eating though.

I like the way you're family is moving along, Gae, you sound like a good dad and I really admire that. :-)

Pretty little 12 incher this am. Berkley stickworm. Hooked up, maybe, two feet from shore.

First shot looking right, second left. Gorgeous spot. Grass flat that empties out to the river ledge.

These two are around the bend to the left from the first two.

Yet more fishing pron

[Image: 87263106-C43-B-466-E-9418-7-CBD613-B5-A26.jpg]

My basic setup. From left to right.

Shimano 8k front and rear drag spinner with 65lb braid on an 8 foot ugly stik. The things a machine. It’s particularly good for live bait with the rear drag lever engaged and set to let the bluegill or pinfish to swim freely. When something takes the bait and runs, the clicking drag sounds off and one turn on the crank deeply sets a circle hook on the fish’s own inertia. It’s not so much a fishing pole as it is a deepwater trap. I set it on a 15 foot custom rod for saltwater.

Shimano 2.5k front drag spinner. 20lb braid. 7ft Shimano rod. Standard stuff, really light action.

Abu Garcia Revo X on an Abu rod. Casting reel, magnetic drag, 20lb hi-vis mono for ripping through weeds and lily pads.

Three cane poles, old trusty. One 13ft two 10ft.

-and these are the reels I learned to fish on.

The rest of the fam’s favorite setups, that I have to haul back and forth through the sticks to get to the good spots.

See why I need a boat? Haven’t even got into the tackle.

I got impatient and decided to grab a cheap v with flipping decks until a nice bass boat comes up at a reasonable price.
