lol, I'd love to be the "bearer of knowledge" on this one, but there's just too much info for a forum post. You prune and train to achieve your pattern, sometimes with the use of a wire grid for support (which you can later remove)

Yep, np, I'm actually in and out right now working in my garden, gonna take some pics and post them for comparison to the pics from a few months ago. Quite a few squash, snow peas..an unbelievable amount of radishes...I love radishes..I plant them on every border, 30 days from seed to harvest..and they'll grow under anything.

I love radishes. The only edibles I have growing at present are chives and rosemary.

Summerqueen, was thinking about low input shoestring type ag enterprises...think I have one you might like.
You'll need some space to grow, a stick, some seeds, and some shelac...sound shoestring enough?
Google "Three Sisters Garden"..basically emulating the native american agricultural method.
Essentially, you'd be growing ornamental corn as a support for pole beans.....which you would dry and collect as seeds. Beneath these things you would be growing ornamental squash, which you would split, hollow, and fill with seeds. Then you shelac the whole thing. Got a great marketing angle. Native american system..blah blah blah...organic..blah blah blah, low impact with no irrigation. Of course they would be beautiful, and much less perishable than vegetables for market. I would also add, that each piece would be a completely unique work of art...hard to get the same exact gourd to grow twice. So there's an idea to float around..lol.
late addition: the cornstalks themselves are also sold for ornamental purposes....or made into corn dolls..etc. In fact, the last time I grew corn, my profits from the stalks were higher than my profits from the corn.

So I'm out checking my garden, and I notice an infestation in my cornstalks. Ants! Ants everywhere. So I'm reaching for my sprayer, and I notice ladybugs...get a little closer, aphids. It's been pouring rain, and I'm fairly certain that these ants have brought their aphid stock up and set them on my cornstalks as a temporary solution. I've never had to deal with these tenders before (too many red ants for a decent black ant pop in S FL). Anyone else have any experience with these little guys? I'm guessing/hoping they'll take their aphids back underground with them when it dries out. I don't want to waste the pesticide if I don't have to, nor do I want to kill the ladybugs. Anyone have experience growing SSE strains of white corn in the northern US?
As an aside, it was an amusing moment for me. I walk out, see the ants and think "what are you doing on my corn" apparently they're gardening.

That is pretty damned cool. We get the big black ants here, and the little red guys. I've never seen 'em on plants here, though, aside from Mesquite trees.

I have an anti-green thumb. Every plant I have will die.
When people offer me plants or shrubberies as a present, I tell them to make sure it is a survivor as I am lacking in botanical skills.

Rhythm, am I just drunker than usual this Sunday afternoon, or did I completely miss the vertical gardening bit you said you posted here? I came back specifically to look for it. I'm pretty much done with all the other bullshit I have to deal with and I'm ready to get back to playing the brunette Poison Ivy.
