Exorcisms
#31
RE: Exorcisms
I think exorcisms are more of a Catholic thing than a Christian thing in general; you don't hear much about it among Protestants. Demonic possessions are seen as possible, but isolated to the time of Christ. You don't come across it in the Old Testament, or really anywhere else.

I also don't think stereotypical possessions present themselves the way Schizophrenia does; perhaps someone hearing voices can be seen as having a demonic encounter, but all the twisting and growling doesn't sound like schizophrenia. Clinical psychology isn't my specialty, however.

The two words you omitted answer your question. Sometimes substitutions help improve comprehension of sentences that you may be struggling with. Let me demonstrate by substituting the nouns in that sentence with something analogous:

-I think amphibious operations are more of a Marine thing than a Military thing in general.

Does that sentence lead you to believe Marines are not part of the military?

Think again

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Your comparison is obsolete.

My comparison was about behavior and motivation, not numbers.

Boru

Exactly. Behavior yields numbers; you can even measure how disastrous an action is by looking at its conclusion which is usually represented by numbers of casualties.

Yeah... cuz everyone knows, if less than 3,000 people died, it basically never happened. You're a real idiot, you know that?

No; but it is better to look at how disastrous the conclusion of an action is before talking about it.

Well, that's not really true. Plenty of Christian denominations deal with exorcisms, though I would probably agree that Catholics, specifically, are more into it than the other denominations.

Also, I think schizophrenia contains a pretty broad range of symptoms and issues, so I wouldn't necessarily rule anything out. Anyway, people can have more than one mental illness... you're not actually suggesting that demonic possession is real, are you?

So, 9/11 wasn't disastrous enough to be worth talking about?
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

Was WWI more disastrous than the WTC attacks?  No possible doubt of it.  But whether an action might be considered 'demonic' (in the sense you used) really has nothing to do with the casualty numbers.  The act of torturing, raping and murdering a single child would, by normal people, be seen as more 'demonic' than a landslide which kills a thousand people.

Numbers don't matter as much as you seem to think.

RE: Exorcisms
I don't know much about exorcism, but it sounds like just torturing someone into compliance. Tie them down, and perform rituals on them until they start saying what you want them to say, and doing what you want them to do. Or die from the experience.
