Do you think I benefitted in some way because you took an oath?

Well, not you, but most people.

RE: To US Veterans...
That was pretty funny.

Do you think it’s because of military action or simple deterrence or what?

I feel like a lot of combat veterans don’t want to hear it and gold star families especially but I genuinely believe the sacrifice is for nothing like what they claim, I mean, I really don’t believe that my rights are being protected or that I’m safer from foreign aggression at all because of what they sacrificed so I feel like it’s only right to say I don’t want people to do that. Especially since it’s, at least to me, obviously done under false pretenses. I feel like there’s very little sincerity and perhaps no sincerity when it comes to our policy making and therefore the orders our military personnel follow are fruitless. I also feel like it’s a trap to say well respect the troops. I respect the troops as human beings but I think joining the military is a bad thing to do simply because I think our foreign policy is consistently bad.

In my short couple years as a soldier I was never in danger but was in a support role training for the possibility of needing to keep a combat communications center operational.  That training was my first experience with anything computer-y.  I met great people, learned a lot about a lot of different things, challenged myself mentally and physically, and am glad I played a small part.

Forget Trump for a minute and say thank you to a veteran.  Chances are if you aren't one someone in you life was or is.

I was married to a veteran. It colored my view of the blind hero worship so many people in the U.S. take part in. That said, I'm very supportive of veterans and am grateful for those who have worked hard for their own good reasons. My grandpa was one of my favorite people. He fought in Korea. I'm just a bit more reserved and careful about my support than most Americans.

Sorry if that was an inappropriate rant.

Now, I take a reserved approach because some vets are well and truly pieces of shit, but you've got to be pretty slow on the uptake if you think absolutely no military operations have made you safer from foreign aggression. Sure, we shouldn't respect people just because they're soldiers, but some select soldiers are among the most respect-worthy people in the world. Desmond T. Doss was a goddamn American hero. That's only one name among countless others.

The thread took a dive before you entered it.

Noted on my part that showing my appreciation is going to wind others up who can't allow that sort of thing to go unchallenged.  Sort of like the shitshow that went on after a former TTA member passed away and I mentioned it here for people who knew him.

Why should it go unchallenged?

I'll give a simple answer: In 1940 Gen. George Catlett Marshall told Congress that if, given the current state of the US military, the Germans were to somehow five divisions of troops they could go just about anywhere they wanted to go.

Yeah, I didn’t mean for my post to be a challenge, but rather a personal caveat to add to my support. I do think this is a very important day and that many people deserve the honor. I have a small chip on my shoulder that shouldn’t detract from those who deserve it.
