Betelgeuse might go off

RE: Betelgeuse might go off
It's dimming 'cause it needs a new Duracell!
The meek shall inherit the Earth, the rest of us will fly to the stars.

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud ..... after a while you realise that the pig likes it!

Should have stayed with that Energizer battery, I guess.

The star is definitely on the verge of going super nova but that is in stellar time. Even a star as massive as Betelgeuse has a lifetime of about 10 million years. That's very short compared to the 10 billion-year life of the sun or 1 trillion-year+ life of red dwarf stars but it's still ridiculously long in human terms. Even if it's in the last tenth of a percent of its life, that's still a period of 10,000 years!

I'd sure love to see it happen but it's probably wishful thinking.

I read the upper layers of Betelgeuse are suspected to harbor gigantic convection upwellings a significant fraction of an AU in diameter.   when each of these convection diapirs reach the star’s surface, the star sheds several Jupiter mass worth of mass in surrounding space.   The star is surrounded by 7-8 discernible asymmetrical shells of material ejected during such events.  When such an event is about to occur, it is suspected the star will drastically dim and then brighten.

When humans of any religion make claims about how important their religion is to them, it isn't a matter of human rights. I do not dispute they claim that. But when I read the scientific reality of how brutal the universe is and how hostile it is to life, I can't help but feel sorry for those who cling to such superstitions. Not because they are bad. But because they have been taught self importance in the wrong context. We as a species are important in the here and now, in as far as we can hope to cooperate and extend our finite ride. But we are not important, friend or foe, in the context 13.8 billion years.

I find it amazing by itself, that with all the quantum events that happened, didn't happen, and could have happened, that could have prevented the evolution of our species, that lead to me. I find it amazing that the atoms in me are a result of the death of prior stars.

But even if humans didn't have nukes, and we were not causing global warming as a species, the universe like a supernova, gamma ray, comet, or meteor could wipe our species out in a second.
