The terror my parents' generation had of a nuclear apocalypse, lest we forget

I'd buy 165 people who claimed to survive both bombs. I'd need robust proof to believe they were under both bombs.

When I was stationed in Japan I witnessed a ceremony where another name was added to the rolls of victims of the bombs. The lady had died in an auto accident a few days earlier.

The Soviet nuclear attack plan was rather telling.
The initial attack would have been against West Germany, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and Italy.
5 kiloton weapons against targets along the internal German boarder, 500 kilotons vs. targets further west, almost all air-burst and avoiding bridges over major waterways as they planned to invade western Europe in the hours following the strike.
Britain and France were not going to be hit as doing so would increase the risk of retaliation.

Like a full blown invasion with tactical nukes wouldn't provoke a response from NATO, with an up ratchet just for fun.

Right? Not to mention if 500kT weapons were actually deployed.

That plan was drawn up in response to Reagan's statement that nuclear war could be confined to Europe.

He was supposed to have participated in the first command post exercise after his election.
Unfortunately some numpty shot him and he was still recovering when it happened.
As a result his participation was rescheduled for Abler Archer '83 which coincided with the timeframe for the Pershing II deployment.
The Soviets put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5.

What were the Soviets thinking?

It would have been nice if Putin had continued with a policy of disarmament.
Hadn't launched an invasion of Ukraine, or set out to dominate the Black Sea...

Sometimes it seems every world leader has gone off the deep end in the last few years.
