Today was a good day...why?

Today was a good day...why?
New guy hired less than a month ago and a complete jerk decided to quit today...sadly, I didn't have the makings for a celebration with me.

Second day he worked with us I told him to get the hell out of my office, he then thought he would yell at me and scare me, I suppose.  I stood up and started around my desk pointing toward the door and repeated myself.  I don't make enough money to put up with his shit.

Going to work tomorrow will be more pleasant.

Got a notice in this morning’s mail that the Public Liability insurance premium on my wife’s business was increasing by 45%.

Figuring that it would be better for me to deal with it than Ellen (she’d likely go into enough of a rage that they’d cancel the policy altogether), I called and - long story short - got the increase down to 5%.

Happy wife, happy life.

Must have been the day for it.  I had to respond to an inspection/audit/survey (everyone seemed to have a different name for it) regarding our general liability insurance.  I am the bookkeeper for a small plumbing company.

Sample questions included:  (them) Does your company have a supervisor?  (me) Yes, the owner.

A few minutes later after asking how many people work at the company.  (them) Does anyone act as a supervisor?  (me)  I thought we just established that.

(them)  Does your company work on water, sewer, gas lines?  (me) Yes.  (them) Which one?  (me) There wasn't an option for do you work on one, all, or a combination of two.  (them) Do you work on water, sewer, gas lines?  (me) Yes.

(them) Do your employees ever have to dig to complete the work?  (me)  Yes.
(them) How deep do they have to dig?  (me) It depends on the lines they are working on.  (them) We need a number.  (me) Okay, lets say three feet.

(them) Do you mostly work on new construction or on remodels?  (me) Neither, we mostly do repairs and replacements.  (them) That's not one of the options.

It's a wonder I don't drink.   Doh

The insurance industry is filled with evil people.

The liability people gave me a raft of bullshit reasons as to why the rate went up.  Here's some that I remember and my responses:

'The shop has more than ten employees'  No, it has three, plus the owner.

'You haven't had an increase in eight years'  That's not MY fault, is it?

'It's tourist season'  Why didn't you increase the rate in all the other tourists seasons?  They come round every year.

'There has been an increase in claims from the businesses in your area'  Raise THEIR rates, then.

And on and on. Took about 40 minutes to get them to not admit that the increase was insane and back it down.  For the record, we don't object to price increases, but they more or less admitted that they couldn't justify 45%.

If you had paid the new rate they wouldn't have complained.

And if I hadn't complained, we'd have had to pay the new rate.
