Babysitting is a specific type of childcare done by someone other than that child’s parent or legal guardian. This not an opinion, it is a fact and cannot be reasonably refuted.

Watching a kid, is watching a kid.

This is as stupid as saying "calamari" and "squid"

NO SHIT someone who is not the parent is the "babysitter". But it is still the intent of watching a kid, which is what a parent does and would want the same attention for the same kid. So no, I have no problem saying that a parent can "babysit" their own kid. Unless you think a child when not under the care of a parent deserves less care under someone who is not their parent?

Sorry, I’m unable to dumb this down any more for you. Good luck and try to quit smoking.

babysit
Also found in: Thesaurus, Medical, Financial, Idioms.
ba·by·sit also ba·by-sit (bā′bē-sĭt′)
v. ba·by·sat (-săt′), ba·by·sit·ting, ba·by·sits also ba·by-sat or ba·by-sit·ting or ba·by-sits
v.intr.
1. To take care of a child or children in the absence of a parent or guardian.
2. To take care of or watch over someone or something needing attention or guidance.
v.tr.
1. To provide care for (a child) in the absence of a parent or guardian.
2. To watch over or tend: babysat the neighbor's plants for a week.

**Note the part that says 'in the absence of a parent or guardian'.

Once again - Brian you don't get to decide what words mean. We have an established definition and saying the mother of child was babysitting for her child is wrong.

We have non-native English speakers here who have a better command of the language.

Oh, I dunno. Brian could stop making silly mistakes or I could stop pointing them out. Either one of these would put a stop to...

Nah, you’re right.
