The original Carrie horror movie.

RE: The original Carrie horror movie.
(April 10, 2020 at 4:55 pm)Rev. Rye Wrote: Honestly, all three versions have their positives (yes, there was a TV version on 2002, which was more faithful to the book and has some of the best performances, but had worse special effects and making the questionable choice of having Carrie live at the end). And their flaws. Honestly, I still think none of them can truly hold a candle to the book.

Here is the thing with all the movies I grew up loving, not just this one. I really hate how time ages any movie. When  you go see a new movie, it is crisp and clear and comes across as bigger than life, and Carrie was one of those movies. But watching it now, while I still love the plot, all the effects look aged. Just like the original Jaws. I will always love that movie, but even watching it today, the shark looks fake now, as it always was, but it fooled my eye as a kid.

When Carrie suddenly gets even with everyone at the prom, and the screen splits in 3 parts, and the fire hose comes out of the wall, it now looks as hokey as any 1960s Godzilla movie. I don't understand how time ages things like that. I think in a literal scientific sensene, without digital remastering, time fades the optical illusions.

I didn't know about the 2002 version.

But being old school, I still prefer camera tricks and scale models and not CG.

Here’s a bit of fun, Brian: Name the actor from ‘Carrie’ was also a regular on the original ‘Miami Vice’.

Was it Elvis, Crockett's gator?

Sorry you threw me in the other thread. Had to rib you for that.

FYI John Travolta was in Carrie, I completely forgot about that till watching it today.

Give me a few minutes. I am guessing it was one of the girls who bullied Carrie. NO that is not my final answer.

Take your time. I thought you deserved an easy one this time around.

Believe it or not, I'm not guessing William Katt.

It would be "easy" if I had been a Miami Vice fan, but I never got into it. I only know of some famous guest stars after the fact.

I never regularly watched the show, so I couldn't tell you who their "regulars" were.

It is akin to the fact I know the black guy on " Two Broke Girls" who played the cashier was also "Sporty James" on the original 80s cop show Hunter.

I know Penn Jillette was on at least one episode of Miami Vice. But he wasn't in Carrie.

Oh, sorry. I thought I recalled you mentioning the show a few times. My mistake.

Michael Talbott?

If I remember correctly, in the pilot episode of Miami Vice, wasn't he the corrupt cop Crockett  busts?

Well done!

I can’t answer your question, because I don’t know anything about the show.

RE: The original Carrie horror movie.
Thanks for challenging me, I just found out because of thread that William Katt, famous for "The Greatest American Hero" auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker. William Katt played "Tommy Ross" in Carrie.

Continuity errors often exist in tv shows. I do think in the pilot Michael's character gets busted for grifting drug dealers.

It is just like in the original Cheers sitcom, Frasier's dad was a psychiatrist like him, but in the spin off "Frasier" his dad was a retired cop.

That was a good one Boru, even the lion question in the other thread threw me off.

I only use that title "Horror" because that is a common use for supernatural motifs with a violent aspect.

But I also wouldn't call it a "Chick flick" either. Guys get bullied too, and trust me, there are a lot of females I have seen in my life, that were/are mentally tougher and stronger than I was growing up and could have used them as friends to protect me.

Ok, so you wouldn’t call it a horror movie, but you called it a horror movie. And you wouldn’t call it a chick flick, but you called it a chick flick.

It’s squarely and firmly in the horror genre, and it isn’t remotely a chick flick.

Boru

I didn't call it a chick flick, go read all the posts, someone else did. I said I wouldn't call it a chick flick, because guys get bullied too.

Yes, I did call it a horror movie. All I was arguing is that Carrie is unique and doesn't really quite fit the word. I only used "Horror",  it because if, back then, you went to a Blockbuster and rented it, it would be in the "Horror" section.

It has the violence aspect of it, but it still was not a monster movie, zombie movie, or slasher movie. If I had to label it, it would be more like a "supernatural thriller".

If Trump had been a character in Carrie, he would have been Travolta under the stage pulling the rope with his girlfriend.
