We used to go there at night, smoke some weed and try to provoke these spirits.

I never personally experienced anything but i know people that say they did
I don't know if the supernatural exists but ive heard some compelling accounts from people that appear to be convinced

Our minds can easily play tricks on us too. Imagination, dream, hallucination, mental disorders, etc...

...belief in gods.

True. Someone who believes in the supernatural will be more likely to hear or see something...

The last night I slept in our house I thought I heard my first wife talking to me. It was just the wind.

I'm pretty sure it was just the wind.

Someone I know used to live in a reputedly haunted house. The previous tenant, an old lady, had died in the house.

Guests who stayed in the spare bedroom said they would wake up in the night to see an old woman standing in a corner watching them.

I stayed there one night looking forward to seeing a ghost.

I woke up in the night to see a figure standing in the corner. It was still there an hour later so I got up to investigate.

It was a coat stand with an old coat thrown over it.

So much for ghosts.

When I was a kid, I used to - every so often - see a giant demon-spider crawl slowly across the ceiling of my bedroom. Terrifying.

Then the elm outside my window died, Da cut it down, and the spider went away.

I wasn’t aware of Shelob at that point in my life. I wasn’t even aware of the Mirkwood spiders.

The demon spider lived in the tree?

Clearly. It was dormant most of the time, though. I think it may have been a were-spider. Moonlight seemed to activate it.
